A generation raised on anime brings those influences into the biggest moments in sports

It’s moments after the buzzer and they’ve done it. The San Antonio Spurs are going to the NBA Finals for the first time since 2014 and they’re led by the 7'4 prodigal phenom from France, Victor Wembanyama. It’s a moment for celebration (and, knowing the league, ultimately a coronation) as he accepts the Western Conference MVP trophy. And upon heading to the back, fully jubilant while greeting arena staff and Spurs executives, he bites down on his hand in a similar fashion to Eren Yeager of Attack on Titan . It’s no coincidence. Victor has publicly admitted that Attack on Titan is his favorite anime, and without a doubt, his stature and dexterity resemble those of a Titan from the series. But arguably the most satisfying part about it to a sports and anime fan like myself is how natural it feels. It’s a reference that doesn’t need explaining, in a space where, not that long ago, it probably would have. On the other side, Victor’s opponent in the NBA Finals is someone who has defied the odds himself in a number of ways. Similar to Shoyo Hinata of Haikyu!! , Jalen Brunson's been called too small to truly carry a team to greatness in the NBA. And yet, he’s among the elite on the court at the NBA Finals. Funnily enough, as revealed by his dad — and former NBA player himself, Rick Brunson — Jalen would spend nights in the shower recreating the classic Vegeta in the rain moment from Dragon Ball Z . His fandom has also led to him designing a pair of custom shoes , inspired by Super Saiyan God Super Saiyan of Dragon Ball Super , so he could grace the court and potentially capture that same energy. So when these two meet on the Finals stage, it reads as more than just a collision of talent. It’s a glimpse into something that’s been quietly reshaping sports culture for years: the worlds of sports and anime running parallel to each other as we waited for the right generation to stop pretending otherwise. From personal experience, those worlds didn’t really speak to each other while I was growing up. The athletes we looked up to didn’t move like that either. They felt more like avatars for greatness, defined by performance and expectation, not by the smaller, more personal things that made them who they were. Iconic players like Michael Jordan or Tom Brady weren’t drawing from anime, nor were they framing their journeys through arcs or characters. The mythology came from somewhere else. Things like highlight reels and commercials. Athletes, at least in the way they were idolized, had a kind of polished intensity that didn’t leave much room for anything outside of sports. Now, athletes like Wembanyama and Brunson, Bijan Robinson and Tyler Allgeier , and Antoine Griezmann and Dominic Solanke are expressing those interests more openly, and that shift isn’t random at all; it’s generational. They didn’t arrive at anime later; they grew up with it alongside the game. So when those influences show up now, they don’t feel like references for the moment. They feel like extensions of who these players already are, part of what they’re trying to embody in real time. Olympic gold medalist Noah Lyles didn’t overcomplicate it when he was asked why anime resonates so much with athletes. He called it “main character energy.” Sports and anime have always been built on a similar premise: the singular figure, the pressure, the idea that if you endure enough, you become something else on the other side. Shows like Naruto and Dragon Ball Z mirror the same rhythms athletes know well — putting in the work, dealing with failure, and finding ways to improve, little by little. That same logic doesn’t just live in how athletes think; it shows up in how they present themselves, too. Not in a loud way, like over-the-top costumes or exaggerated anime hairstyles, but in smaller, more intentional choices: the sneakers, the fits, the little references that hit instantly if you’re paying attention. Like Israel Adesanya slipping into a Rock Lee pose , or even in wrestling, where everything’s already heightened, and Ricochet leans into his heel character by stepping out in an admiral-style coat, a fantastic nod to ONE PIECE . We, as anime fans, live for the moments where we instinctively get to do the Leonardo DiCaprio meme point on the screen for moments in which we’re seen. And once you start noticing it, it shows up more often than you’d expect, in ways that aren’t always as obvious but feel just as intentional. If this were even a decade ago, the easiest way to explain everything would be to say that anime crossed over into sports culture — because honestly, the two felt worlds apart. But today, that doesn't feel right. Nowadays, it's already part of the people stepping into those spaces. The same kids who were watching Naruto after school were in the gym early the next morning getting shots up, training, running drills, and putting in work. By the time they made it to the pros, those influences weren’t separate; they were already layered into how they saw themselves, how they competed, and how they understood growth. And the beautiful part is that they show no fear in expressing it. Look no further than figure skating gold medalists Amber Glenn and Alysa Liu, who have been very vocal about their love of anime, a love that’s been illustrated by Macross Frontier character designer and illustrator Risa Ebata. Meanwhile, retired volleyball Olympian Sarah Pavan once stated that the boys of Haikyu!! changed her life . What also helped change the culture was access. Anime got easier to watch, easier to share, easier to reference without feeling like you had to explain yourself. You didn’t have to hunt for episodes or wait for a certain time slot — you could just press play, send a clip, and build a conversation around it. That kind of access doesn’t just make something popular; it makes it normal. It turns something niche into something that travels, something that sticks, and something that shows up in places you wouldn’t have expected before . You can see that shift not just in the players, but in everything around them. Teams leaning into anime nights , schedule releases styled like opening credits, entire campaigns built around the same visual language fans grew up on. The culture hasn’t just grown from people on the court or the field anymore. It’s the designers, the social teams, the people behind the scenes who came up on the same shows and are now shaping how sports looks and feels in real time. The references aren’t accidental. They’re baked in. And now, it’s just part of the mix. Athletes aren’t sectioning off who they are anymore; they’re bringing everything with them. The same person can be locked in on game film, tapped into music, deep into gaming, and still find something in an anime character that resonates. It’s not a contradiction; it’s just a fuller picture, and once you start looking at it that way, it gets harder to see anime and sports as separate worlds at all.

Mexican guitar duo Rodrigo y Gabriela are about to bring some manga-inspired flair to their upcoming seventh album, OurHome. The lead single from the upcoming album is titled "Monster," inspired by Naoki Urasawa's manga of the same name. To celebrate the album's imminent launch, the duo collaborated with Urasawa for jacket art and a new music video. The duo, made up of Rodrigo Sánchez and Gabriela Quintero, received critical acclaim for their 2019 album Mettavolution. Urasawa was already aware of them, and recently came across a post online indicating that they had performed "Monster" at a recent Tokyo concert. The two met up with Urasawa in person, telling him they're big fans of Monster , and this collaboration is the result. Check out the music video for the song, featuring a time-lapse of Urasawa drawing the single's jacket art: Rodrigo y Gabriela: "Monster" Music Video Rodrigo y Gabriela "Monster" jacket illustration OurHome , featuring the single "Monster," goes on sale September 18. Pre-orders are now open for the album . Naoki Urasawa's manga Monster ran from 1994 to 2001 in Shogakukan's Big Comic Original and was released across 18 volumes. The manga was followed by Urasawa's 2002 novel Another Monster and a 74-episode anime adaptation in 2004. The manga has won multiple awards and launched Urasawa into the international spotlight. VIZ publishes an English-language edition of Monster , describing the first volume thus: Everyone faces uncertainty at some point in their lives. Even a brilliant surgeon like Kenzo Tenma is no exception. But there’s no way he could have known that his decision to stop chasing professional success and instead concentrate on his oath to save peoples’ lives would result in the birth of an abomination. The questions of good and evil now take on a terrifyingly real dimension. Years later, in Germany during the tumultuous post-reunification period, middle-aged childless couples are being killed one after another. The serial killer’s identity is known. The reasons why he kills are not. Dr. Tenma sets out on a journey to find the killer’s twin sister, who may hold some clues to solving the enigma of the “Monster.” Source: Comic Natalie

This isn't Ichijo's first venture into the world of Fist of the North Star , either — he voiced Raoh in 2013 parody anime DD Fist of the North Star , set in a world where the apocalypse never happened and the characters are gainfully employed in modern-day Japan. Fist of the North Star: Hokuto no Ken , the latest anime adaptation of Buronson and Tetsuo Hara's Fist of the North Star manga, premiered on April 10, 2026 on Japanese television and Prime Video worldwide. The original Fist of the North Star manga was serialized from 1983 to 1988 in Shueisha's Weekly Shonen Jump. Buronson wrote and Tetsuo Hara illustrated the series, which was also released in 27 collected volumes. VIZ Media publishes an English-language version. The series has previously been adapted into numerous anime and video games, a 1995 live-action film (starring Gary Daniels), and even a musical stage play. Hiroshi Maeda directs the newest anime adaptation at animation studio TMS Entertainment, with series composition by Kazuhiko Inukai, character designs by Naoki Hisatsune, assistant direction by Kazuma Ogasawara, animation direction by Koji and music by Yuki Hayashi. NIA Animation and Kishida Studio BACU provide animation production assistance. The synopsis of Fist of the North Star reads: In the year 199X, the world is engulfed in a nuclear inferno! The seas have vanished. The earth lies in ruins. It seems all life has been wiped out...but humanity has not perished! Across the scorched and broken land, survivors cling to hope, desperately searching for food and water. However, their hopes are trampled underfoot by violence. Might makes right in this world, and the weak are crushed without mercy. From the depths of that despair, a lone man with seven scars on his chest emerges. His name is Kenshiro, heir to the legendary assassination art Hokuto Shinken. As he roams the wasteland in pursuit of his sworn enemy Shin, who stole his fiancée Yuria, Kenshiro answers the cries of the oppressed, becoming a beacon of hope in a world of despair. Standing in his path are brutal survivors of the apocalypse, their ambitions twisted by power and greed. In a world where the weak are prey and prayers go unheard, Kenshiro forges a path with his iron fists! Source: Comic Natalie

The anime adaptation of Kamome Shirahama's magical manga, Witch Hat Atelier , is the story of Coco, a kind and hardworking young girl who daydreams about becoming a witch. When she accidentally discovers the secret truth behind magic, her life is forever changed. As a new apprentice to the witch Qifrey, Coco does her best in her studies so she can undo a costly mistake. Let’s talk about everything that happened in Episode 11 of Witch Hat Atelier ! WARNING: Full details for Witch Hat Atelier Episode 11 follow. Seriously, spoilers ahead! Spell-cialty Agott flies over the rolling fields near their atelier, watching scalewolves in the wild. The young witch’s thoughts turn to Coco and how much she’s learned since joining them. Maybe she’s not so different from them even though she’s an Outsider? As for Coco herself, she and her teacher Qifrey are inside working together and looking over her successfully drawn spells. He points out that her lines are perfectly straight, thanks to her experience in her mother’s tailoring shop. He suggests she remind herself out loud that she has a specialty when she needs a boost of confidence. Coco’s delighted to be good at something. Her excitement spills over when Qifrey gives her books with new spells to practice. She encourages Richeh, sitting nearby, to take a look, but the other witch staunchly refuses. After Qifrey pushes the issue, Richeh storms away in anger, and Coco follows her out of the room. Hiding Place Olruggio, who had been snoozing on the sofa, observes that Richeh won’t grow if she won’t listen to her teacher. Coco apologizes through the door of Richeh’s workroom, but there’s no response. She pushes open the door to talk to her, but the other witch isn’t in the room. The brushbuddy shows Coco a hidden passage to a small but cozy tunnel underground – Richeh’s secret hiding place. Glittering crystal ribbons hang from the ceiling, created from a spell Richeh devised, and Coco’s enchanted by them. (They make her eyes happy.) She asks Richeh why she doesn’t like looking at other people’s spells; she says she wants to only think about her own spells. She doesn’t want books to tell her what to do or what to draw. Snugstones At the same time, Qifrey and Olruggio chat for a moment. Olly tosses him a pouch of enchanted stones he created with a new spell. He named them Snugstones, made to place under the bedcovers to get a cozy and warm night’s rest. When Qifrey observes that Olly shows his kindness in his magic rather than his words, the other witch loudly protests that it’s just for work. There are five stones in the pouch, four for the apprentices and one for Qifrey. Teachers need a good night’s sleep, too. Just then, a letter from the Great Hall magically arrives, informing Qifrey and his students that the second test begins in three days at Serpentback Cave in Cape Romonon. Later, Richeh dreams of a memory of creating the crystal ribbons when she was small. Her older brother, Rili, smiles and tells her that he loves when she makes spells that express who she is. As he walks away, the memory turns fuzzy, and he doesn’t turn around as she calls out to him. Richeh wakes up with a start, dozing inside the carriage on the way to the witch’s test. The Snugstones really work – even Agott fell asleep instead of practicing on the way like she’d planned. Sincerity of the Shield Outside Serpentback Cave, Master Kukrow introduces his own apprentice, Euini, as his little failure. This is the boy’s third attempt at the test. Qifrey protests as the rude witch continues to insult the poor boy, but they’re interrupted by the test proctor. It’s Alaira, Qifrey’s friend, and she’s wearing a Mirror Cloak of Borrowshade that disguises her as a beast. The Sincerity of the Shield test entails protecting penguin-like myrphons while escorting them through the enchanted cave. The witches have cloaks of their own to blend in with the myrphons. If they’re seen using magic, or if the witch or their myrphon leaves the cave without the other, they fail. Richeh is shocked to hear that Qifrey has signed her up for the test; she feels betrayed, as he promised she could do what she wanted. He tells her that completing the test will do just that and asks her to trust him. Master Kukrow complains about Richeh and children in general, earning an icy glare from Qifrey. The unpleasant witch leaves, uninterested in what happens to his own apprentice. Euini, Agott and Richeh prepare to enter the cave with Alaira and their myrphons. Qifrey silently wishes them all well, hoping they make their journey safely without getting lost in the dark… Will Agott and Richeh complete their trial?
Can the group defeat the new daemons?

Welcome to Daemons of the Shadow Realm and the recap for the tenth episode, “Long-Arm and Long-Leg.” In the previous episode, while out shopping for new clothes, Dera and Yuru realize that they’re being followed. They manage to turn the tables on their would-be stalkers by leading them to the Lost House, only to run into Long-Arm and Long-Leg, Daemons that are more powerful than anything Yuru and Dera are prepared to face. So it looks like it’s up to Right and Left to take them on. SPOILERS FOR Daemons of the Shadow Realm EPISODE 10 AHEAD Right and Left’s Master Dera wakes up an old woman, the only surviving stalker, and she’s just as horrified by the new Daemons as they are. This means that they’re a “third party,” and Dera has no idea how they made it to the Lost House. Right and Left met them years ago and helped the then-owner of Seal trap them in Mt. Yamou. But after over a thousand years, their new Master freed them. Now, they have a grudge against Right and Left and everyone else for all the nasty rumors spread about them. After all, they just ate a few people. And now they’re hungry for the new master of Right and Left. Dera, to draw attention from Yuru, pretends to command Right and Left to fight Long-Arm and Long-Leg and the two Daemons follow along. Dera runs and the two enemy Daemons chase him. Right blocks Long-Arm, but soon finds his head being smashed into the ground by the villain. Left takes on Long-Leg, but Long-Leg’s attacks are too fast and chaotic. Dera shoots a few bullets at Long-Arm, and barely manages to dodge Long-Arm’s attack. Right transforms into his glowing form and knocks Long-Arm back. But Long-Arm and Long-Leg seem to have the upperhand. Dera regroups with Yuru and the latter wonders why Dera claimed to be the Master. Dera replies that he’s Yuru’s guardian and he promised Asa that he’d look after Yuru. Yuru wants to join the fight, but the old woman tells him that’s absurd. Then Dera asks her if she was with the Kagemoris or Higashi Village. She reveals that she’s with Asuma and that he told her not to harm them. Nearby, one of Asuma’s butterflies watches them and we see Asuma sitting in a trance at Kagemori mansion. Dera asks the “granny” to summon her Daemons and fight, but she’d been instructed to leave hers behind as Right and Left would’ve noticed them. Since Long-Arm and Long-Leg know the way in and out of the Lost House, they’re all in big trouble, so Yuru offers to go look for their master. He tells the granny to come with him, and she reveals a hidden array of knives in her coat. She’ll join, but she has to be home to cook her husband dinner soon. New Plan Dera tries to get into the Lost House’s Armory, but Long-Arm attacks him. Right manages to wrangle Long-Arm temporarily, but soon both he and Left find themselves tied up. Meanwhile, Yuru and Granny look for the master, but all they seem to find are the corpses of folks who’ve gotten lost near Lost House. Long-Leg suddenly has its right eye blown out, thanks to a high-powered sniper rifle that Dera has found. Long grudges are no match for “modern technology,” he believes and his next shots knock out Long-Leg’s other eye and a chunk of Long Arm’s hip. Right and Left swing the Daemons and crash them into one another, but the Daemons take the opportunity to connect, turning into one gigantic set of Daemons. Then Long-Arm grabs Granny and tries to feed her to Long-Leg, since eating people heals them. To save herself, granny reveals that Yuru, the young man, was actually the master and the twin who will inherit Seal. Long-Arm and Long-Leg decide to eat her anyway, but Yuru throws an axe at Long-Arm and the Daemons drop her. Yuru announces that he is indeed the master of Right and Left, and that Right and Left are not to do anything until he commands them. Yuru runs away and the Daemons pursue him, announcing that this combined form is the Tenaga-Ashinaga! Yuru barely manages to dodge some of their attacks and in the meantime, they discover Dera’s hiding spot and tell him that they’ll kill him after they eat Yuru. Yuru tries to gain cover near the Lost House, but he’s spotted immediately. The Daemons slam a tree trunk down on Yuru and appear to have mortally wounded him. Fake Out Yuru pretends to have Seal, though, and bluffs his way into momentarily stunning Long-Arm. Then Right grabs Long-Arm and slings him into the river, where a giant stone statue is dropped on top of him. Then Dera blows off Long-Leg’s head with a sniper shot. Right and Left retrieve the relics of the deceased Daemons and Right commends Yuru for the trick he played. Yuru remembered the way Asa used Break at the Higashi Village and merely did the opposite of her movements. If the Daemons were that terrified of the mere idea of Seal, though, Yuru thinks that it might be something really powerful. Then Left grabs a butterfly out of the air. She’s sensed a Daemon following them ever since they left the Kagemori’s, and this is it. Granny recognizes the butterfly as a part of Asuma’s Daemons. What's next for the group?
And seriously, watch Chainsaw Man

Clarion’s brand new EP, Blue Fairy , brings out the best of what guitars have to offer. The record’s wall of sound and catchy hooks have the special ability to take you far away from the troubles of life and into a world of shoegazey joy. If you are looking for something new to listen to this summer, look no further. It may come as no surprise, then, that the band count themselves as members of the anime community, as you can tell from their new video for “Hello Juliet.” In fact, as you’ll soon discover, vocalist/bassist Saya was actually named after an anime! Band members Saya Olivia and Anthony Sanchez chatted with me about the new EP, the link between guitar music and anime, and why everyone should watch Chainsaw Man . Tell me a little bit about your new EP, Blue Fairy ! Anthony Sanchez : Blue Fairy itself is what we're trying to show the world what we can be, and what we are. We always say that this EP represents our refined tone and how we’re moving toward solidifying ourselves as a staple in people's playlists. Was there anything different you tried on this record? Anthony : Mainly for me, it was mic placements, different effects, and layering guitars like crazy. I wanted fans to feel like the song was enveloping them as it progressed. Saya Olivia : I put a lot more detail and attention into the vocals this time around. Our producer Aaron and I really took time to sit down and talk about these songs and get me into the right headspace to record them. It was really emotional but I think that helped me a lot! Photo by Jaxon Left Is anime something that is on or around when you’re writing or recording? Anthony : Not for myself at least, I usually write riffs and music after watching something or just comes up from the blue. Saya : Not typically but I usually read some manga in my down time. Your style of music is pretty ingrained in anime! What is it about loud, fuzzy rock that works so well with anime? Saya : Anime is usually very bright and action based. Of course loud progressive rock would look bad*ss with anime haha. Anthony : I would have to say just loud and abrasive rock meshes well with anime because of how action packed both are. Guitars feedbacking and playing distorted heavy riffs while the main character is fighting the antagonists they've been hyping up in the series seems to be something that is just perfect together. Do you have any Japanese artists (especially ones from anime openings and endings) that you listen to or take influence from? Saya : I love Supercar, The Pillows, Number Girl, Tricot. I also love certain songs from certain artists, so I listen quite a bit. Anthony : YES! I love Asian Kung Fu Generation and The Pillows, both of them are anime staples and I strive to insert their influence on me into our music. Where did your anime journey begin? Where has it ended up? Anthony : For myself, it really only has been small anime series now and then, I began by watching the first season of Sword Art Online , then Initial D , then JUJUTSU KAISEN , and One Punch Man . I don’t really watch as much anime as I should if I'm being honest, but the ones above are my favorite because they catch my attention with all the hype moments. Saya : The first anime I was ever introduced to was Blood: The Last Vampire . It’s the anime I was named after! It's still one of my favorite movies/animations to this day. I give thanks to my uncle and dad for being super cool. The first anime I watched on my own when I was like fifth grade was Claymore! definitely was such an intriguing show to me at that age. My cousins also showed me Gunslinger Girl . I ended up watching more rom-coms growing up like Black Butler , Ouran High School Host Club , Horimiya , Toradora! , Nisekoi: False Love , My Love STORY!! , Welcome to the N.H.K , Masamune-kun’s Revenge and so many more that I forget. I also love anime like Puella Magi Madoka Magica !!! That's one of my favorites. I’ve also seen some classics like Naruto and what not. My personal favorite right now is Chainsaw Man . Some people probably already see me talking about it online and at shows hahaha. I'm leaving out a lot here, but needless to say, I love anime. I also read manga a lot more! That’s also a list of its own but lately I've been into psychological horror. Flowers of Evil , Goodnight Pun Pun , Homunculus , Happiness and so many other types of stories I can get into. Do you all have a favorite anime of all time? Anthony : For myself it is Initial D . It is what got me into older JDM cars, and that part of my life where I was buying and fixing up old JDM cars will always be with me. Saya : I love Chobits . I prefer the manga ending but I love both the anime and manga. It’s such a beautiful love story and also tragic in some way and how many different types of people in their world could handle the ideas of Persocoms. Also if I haven’t said it already, I love Chainsaw Man . It’s such a break away from a lot of tropes. I feel like such a fresh breath of air. Why do you think fans of your type of music and anime overlap so much? Anthony : Loud rock just meshes perfectly, such as our song “Hello Juliet” the snare roll into the hard hitting guitars just meshes well with so many scenes! Saya : I feel like this was bound to happen with the amount of times I would talk at shows and mention how our song “Inertia” is about Goodnight Pun Pun and how “Taxidermy” is about Chobits . Also “American Girl” is about Nisekoi ! We also have some old songs from our archives about Blood on the Tracks and Madoka Magica and the manga Happiness ! I’m not afraid to write about some of my other favorite forms of art! If you could add any anime character from any series to your band, who would it be and what would they do? Anthony : This is such a funny thing to ask! I would say Saitama from One Punch Man . I would have him carry our gear and be our security guard. Saya: Bocchi from BOCCHI THE ROCK! . Do I need to explain myself? Do you have a message for Crunchyroll readers out there? Anthony : Live, laugh, and love! Watch your favorite series and don’t let anyone tell you you can't enjoy what you like. Saya : GIVE CHAINSAW MAN A CHANCE ITS NOT JUST A SILLY ANIME/MANGA! If that answer isn’t allowed, I would say give this anime a chance, it really takes a lot of tropes and stigma around anime and flips them. Also don’t let anyone tell you what to and what not to watch! You like what you like just don’t be weird haha. Listen to Clarion here , including their brand new song “JILT.”

The official X (formerly Twitter) account for Shiranuhi , an upcoming new original anime short film from CoMix Wave Films, released a main poster visual today today. The tagline reads: "In that light, I wished for my father's death." The latest film from the studio behind Makoto Shinkai’s recent hits, including Your Name. (2016) and Suzume (2022), is set to open in Japan on August 21, 2026 . Additionally, videos showing ano (Ouran Nakagawa in DEAD DEAD DEMONS DEDEDEDE DESTRUCTION ), who plays the protagonist Minato, during her voice recording session along with an interview have also been released. She said in the interview, "I was very interested in voice acting, so I was extremely grateful. When I received the offer, I felt some anxiety about whether I could play a boy's role, so I tried out many different ways of using my voice beforehand. Since it is different from my natural voice, there were many difficult parts, but I was able to absorb so much. Despite facing various challenges, it was a very positive and rewarding experience. " Ryo Katanosaka, who has worked in a fresh fish section of a supermarket while pursuing independent filmmaking as a freelance filmmaker, will direct Shiranuhi based on his own original story and screenplay. This marks his first commercial anime film work. Taro Umebayashi, known for his work on Yuri!!! on ICE , provides the soundtrack for the film, with singer-songwriter Ichiko Aoba performing the theme song. Umebayashi has previously served as a co-composer and arranger on Aoba's albums. GAGA will distribute the film in Japan. The story takes place in late summer 1996. Minato, a 10-year-old boy living in a seaside town in Kumamoto, lived in constant fear with his alcoholic father. Minato's only solace was "Ben-chan," the goddess who appeared on Benten Island. Only the time spent with her allowed Minato to feel like himself again. However, his placement in a children's home was finalized, and the time to say goodbye to Ben-chan drew near. Minato prays to the mysterious light floating in the sea, known as "Shiranuhi," which is said to grant one wish. Yet as his hatred for his father grows, that "prayer" becomes an irreversible "curse." Source: Shiranuh i official X (formerly Twitter)

Souta Ueno serves as director at Studio Deen

Kyousuke Motomi's Dengeki Daisy manga will receive a TV anime adaptation in 2027. The anime's official website and X (formerly Twitter) account opened today, revealing a teaser visual featuring the two main characters, Teru Kurebayashi and Tasuku Kurosaki, alongside the Blue Daisy — the symbol of the series. The tagline reads: "I'll protect you no matter what." Souta Ueno ( Days with My Stepsister ) will direct Dengeki Daisy at Studio Deen. Sawako Hirabayashi ( Delicious Party Precure ) handles the series composition, Ayaka Murakami ( Days with My Stepsister ) works on the character designs, and Masaru Yokoyama ( Yowamushi Pedal ) provides the music. Director Ueno said, "The trivial things, the important things, the wounds of misunderstanding, the unpardonable past, and the past that cannot be forgiven — I hope to depict what it means to carry each and every moment, —time after time—, and live on together with all of it." Series composition writer Hirabayashi added, "'Feature phones,' commonly known as 'garakei' in Japan, were an iconic symbol of the 2000s. The text characters lined up on those tiny screens left a unique impression, different from that of computer emails. I believe there were certain feelings that could only be conveyed through them. This work begins with a secret relationship connected via such a 'feature phone.' Whether you have been a fan for a long time or are meeting this work for the first time, I hope you enjoy it." Additionally, the original manga author Kyousuke Motomi shared a newly drawn celebratory illustration and said, "I heard that Dengeki Daisy is getting an anime adaptation, is it true...? It seems it is really happening. This is incredible. I can't believe the day is finally coming where we get to see Teru and Kurosaki in action! I am so excited and can hardly wait for the 2027 broadcast. To all the animation staff, please take good care of Dengeki Daisy." Kyousuke Motomi's original Dengeki Daisy manga was serialized in Shogakukan's Betsucomi magazine from May 2007 to October 2013, with 16 tankobon volumes released. Its total worldwide circulation has exceeded five million copies. VIZ Media, which published an English edition of the manga, describes the first volume as such One day at school, Teru accidentally breaks a window and agrees to pay for it by helping Kurosaki with chores around school. Kurosaki is an impossible taskmaster though, and he also seems to be hiding something important from Teru... Source: Press Release

As of the weekend of June 5–7, the 29th Detective Conan feature film has earned a cumulative total of 13 billion yen (81 million USD) from 8.83 million admissions. This is 93.5% of the 13.9 billion yen (86.76 million USD) on 9.65 million admissions recorded during the same timeframe for the 28th film, One-eyed Flashback , in 2025. Fallen Angel of the Highway has also now reached 32nd place in Japan's all-time box office rankings , surpassing Jurassic Park (1993 / 12.85 billion yen). It debuted in sixth place, the highest among the weekend's newcomers. The live-action film adaptation of Akane Tamura's manga A Side Character's Love Story (known as Mobuko no Koi in Japan) opened in 184 theaters on June 5 but did not appear in the Top 10 in its opening weekend. On the other hand, the film ranked fourth in Filmarks' first-day satisfaction ranking with an average score of 3.95/5.0 based on 524 reviews.
Based on the manga by Kohei Horikoshi, the My Hero Academia anime has finally wrapped up the story of Izuku Midoriya, Class 1-A and all of the characters that made the series one of the most popular shonen ever. While there’s a spinoff you can watch right now to revisit the world ( My Hero Academia: Vigilantes ), there’s never a bad time to reminisce on the characters from the original. Here’s a list of some fan-favorite heroes from My Hero Academia — both pro heroes and students. Of course, there are way too many My Hero Academia characters to fit on this list, but these 20 should be a good start! My Hero Academia Heroes My Hero Academia Students My Hero Academia Pro Heroes My Hero Academia Students My Hero Academia is primarily told from the POV of the students who are hoping to become heroes in the future. With U.A. having multiple classes and different schools existing in Japan, there are a lot of kids in the anime! Below is a list of 10 of My Hero Academia 's key students (along with some honorable mentions), but there are plenty more where this list comes from. Izuku Midoriya Izuku Midoriya, who takes the once demoralizing name Deku and embraces it as his hero name, starts the series as a young boy obsessed with heroes. However, he’s one of the few Quirkless people in a world full of Quirks (superpowers), making the likelihood of him becoming a hero nearly impossible... until he crosses paths with All Might, the strongest hero in the world (and his personal favorite). All Might begins to mentor Deku after witnessing his potential as a hero, passing down his Quirk, One For All, which leads to all sorts of conflicts with the League of Villains, the ultimate evil (All For One), and other foes. Throughout My Hero Academia , it’s not just Deku’s strength that makes an impact on hero society; his determination and willingness to help anyone in need also inspire those around him. Katsuki Bakugo Over the course of My Hero Academia , Bakugo evolves from being Deku’s bully to his rival and, ultimately, one of his closest friends and one of the most popular U.A. students. Bakugo’s explosion Quirk developed when he was young and had a lot of potential, so he always had high hopes of being a top hero and attending U.A. High School. Bakugo grows up to have a loud personality to match his Quirk, but learns to rely on his friends when he needs help and not to write others off because of perceived weaknesses. He eventually dons the name Great Explosion Murder God Dynamight and, arguably, has one of the best character growth arcs of the entire series. Shoto Todoroki If you’re a fan of My Hero Academia , you probably have a certain Sports Festival fight in your head when you think of Shoto Todoroki. As the youngest in the Todoroki family, Shoto’s entire life was mapped out for him before he’d even been born, as his parents were part of an arranged marriage with the expectation of producing a child with the best possible Quirk (spoiler: we’ll get to Shoto’s father, Endeavor, later). As a result, Todoroki was born with the ability to wield both ice and fire and was subjected to intense training from his father from an early age. Todoroki has to learn to break free from his family’s expectations and follow his own path, a rather difficult journey as the Todoroki family story gets progressively more intense with every season of My Hero Academia . Ochaco Uraraka Ochaco is probably one of the most underrated characters in My Hero Academia due to her bubbly personality and the simplicity of her Quirk, which allows her to manipulate gravity when touching someone. However, she constantly overcomes the odds to save lives, defeat enemies, and motivate her allies when it really matters most. Ochaco is one of Deku’s closest friends and, like him, starts to see the good in the villains they face — in her case, Himiko Toga. Tenya Iida Tenya Iida was introduced as someone who might be mistaken for being a little too uptight. However, as My Hero Academia goes on, it’s revealed that he’s really just incredibly disciplined so he can pick up the mantle of Ingenium after his older brother. His Engine Quirk, cool demeanor, and problem-solving abilities made him an essential part of Class 1-A and their adventures. That said, if you run down the halls, he will lecture you. Momo Yaoyorozu It was immediately clear that Momo was one of the most intelligent members of Class 1-A. This is partly due to her Quirk, which allows her to create objects, especially ones she’s familiar with. As a result, she’s often the brains behind Class 1-A’s missions, pushing past her worries to lead them in some pretty grueling situations like the Paranormal Liberation War, acting as a vital part of the battle against Gigantomachia along with the likes of Eijiro Kirishima and Mina Ashido. Mirio Togata Throughout his time in the series, Mirio is considered to be the top student at U.A. and part of the Big Three: the students who represent the top hero candidates in Japan. His ability to phase through solid objects, combined with his fighting prowess and training from Sir Nighteye, makes him stand out among even some professional heroes. As a matter of fact, some people immediately expected him to become the heir apparent to All Might as the top hero upon graduation from U.A. Nejire Hado Nejire, another member of U.A.’s Big Three, shows that she's capable of taking on incredibly strong enemies. Her Quirk, called Wave Motion, allows her to project energy from her hands and feet. This gives her the ability to fly at high speeds with precise control and to attack in combat. Nejire is always encouraging others, particularly her fellow Big Three friends, Mirio and Tamaki. Tamaki Amijiki Rounding out the Big Three of U.A., Tamaki has one of the most unique Quirks among the trio, but lacks the confidence to use it to its best potential. His Manifest Quirk lets him adopt the physical traits of whatever he eats. For example, if he eats a dish that contains lobster, he can grow a lobster claw for an arm. He trains with Fat Gum, and while he often states that he wants to go home, he always comes through in a pinch, taking on impossible odds throughout the series. Hitoshi Shinso Hitoshi’s story proves that combining hard work, talent, and opportunity is essential to achieving your dreams. When he first appears in My Hero Academia , he’s a member of Class 1-C in the general education department. However, he wants to be a hero, but his brainwashing Quirk makes people think he wouldn’t be fit for the part. Thanks to teachers like Aizawa seeing his potential, he’s able to join Class 1-A in the path to becoming a hero. More My Hero Academia Students Eijiro Kirishima (Class 1-A) Mina Ashido (Class 1-A) Denki Kaminari (Class 1-A) Tsuyu Asui (Class 1-A) Yuga Aoyama (Class 1-A) Fumikage Tokoyami (Class 1-A) Kyoka Jiro (Class 1-A) Sero Hanta (Class 1-A) Neito Monoma (Class 1-B) Itsuka Kendo (Class 1-B) My Hero Academia Pro Heroes The My Hero Academia students need someone to look up to. That's where the pro heroes come in. Whether some of these pros are teachers or actively working heroes, they end up being the inspiration for the future generation of heroes, be it their accomplishments or learning from their flaws. There are a lot of pros out there, but this list of 10 (plus honorable mentions) offers a good variety of characters. All Might All Might, whose birth name is Yagi Toshinori, is the former top hero in Japan and the eighth holder of One for All, which he passed down to Deku. For most of his career, All Might was viewed as the world’s “Symbol of Peace” and ended an era of villainy and chaos as he fought against his greatest adversary, All for One. It was during one of these fights that he was severely injured and had to eventually retire from being a hero and find a mentee. While All Might certainly inspired an entire generation of heroes to follow in his footsteps, his work as Yagi Toshinori is just as impactful. Eraser Head Shoto Aizawa is a professional hero who spends most of his time as a teacher for U.A.’s Class 1-A. As an alumnus of the highly prestigious academy, Aizawa has spent most of his life either molding future heroes or learning from past heroes. His Quirk, which allows him to temporarily cancel out someone else’s Quirk, is a great advantage for both fighting villains and helping corral a classroom of superpowered teenagers. That said, he’ll always be there for his problem children, whether that means fighting an overpowered Nomu or stepping onto the frontlines of the final war. NOTE: You can actually see Aizawa's backstory in My Hero Academia: Vigilantes Season 2! Endeavor Enji Todoroki, also known as Endeavor, is the strongest hero in Japan after All Might. As impressive as that is, he was obsessed with being the strongest and tried to force that same obsession onto his children, including Shoto Todoroki. This led him to make some objectively terrible decisions in his personal life, which he later came to regret as he took the number one hero spot after All Might’s retirement. From that moment, Endeavor faces his actions head-on (or has them literally aired on live TV), leading to his resolve to make a world that the next generation could walk toward despite his own missteps. Hawks Hawks (real name Keigo Takami) often presents himself as a laid-back and carefree guy, but he’s actually one of the most calculated heroes in My Hero Academia . Hawks’ Quiks allows him to fly and control each of his individual feathers. Along with his Quirk, he relies on his intellect and personality to go deep undercover and obtain valuable information to keep villains in check. Hawks hopes to create a world where heroes will be able to be as laid-back as he appears to be. Mirko Rumi Usagiyama, known as Mirko, is a close-combat specialist who is essentially grit and determination personified. Her Rabbit Quirk gives her the physical traits of a rabbit, meaning her kicks are incredibly powerful and she has exceptional mobility. By the time she’s introduced in My Hero Academia , she’s already a top 10 hero and stays on that list for the rest of the series for good reason. Gran Torino Gran Torino (Sorahiko Torino) may technically be retired, but his importance to My Hero Academia makes him a key character since he had a close relationship with three different carriers of One For All. In his youth, he used his jet-propulsion Quirk to fight alongside Nana Shimura. He then mentored her successor, All Might, and then went on to mentor Deku. Don’t let his height or age fool you; he can still hold his own in a fight. Best Jeanist Best Jeanist (Tsunagu Hakamada) is an example of a hero with a Quirk that most people might think isn’t suited to most situations, but who finds a way to lean into his strengths. Thanks to his unique Quirk, he can basically use his own clothes, or any he can find nearby, like weapons, since he can manipulate fabric. He runs his own hero agency and takes Bakugo under his wing to help him grow into a professional hero. Fat Gum Fat Gum (Taishiro Toyomitsu) served as a mentor to Tamaki Amijiki and Eijiro Kirishima during My Hero Academia Season 4, and later, Tetsutetsu Tetsutetsu of Class 1-B joined the group. His fat absorption Quirk lets him use his body fat to trap enemies or be converted into muscle for offensive power. Beyond his Quirk, Fat Gum does a great job inspiring his interns, such as seeing Tamaki’s potential despite his anxieties, and encouraging Kirishima when facing the likes of the Shie Hassaikai. Present Mic Present Mic is one of the most present teachers at U.A. throughout the entire series and is a lot more lighthearted than the likes of his good friend Aizawa. Don’t let that pleasant demeanor fool you; Mic’s booming voice makes him plenty useful during fights when used effectively. Present Mic, real name Hizashi Yamada, attended U.A. with Aizawa and their friend, Shirakumo, and like Aizawa, he cares deeply for all his students. Star and Stripe Cathleen Bate, known as Star and Stripe, appeared in My Hero Academia for only a couple of episodes, but she left an incredibly lasting impact. She was the top hero in the United States of America and came to Japan to help them take on All for One and Shigaraki. Her Quirk gave her the ability to change reality, one rule at a time, allowing her to regularly gain the upper hand in a fight. It also didn’t hurt that she was incredibly strong and had an entire fleet of fighter jet pilots as backup. More My Hero Academia Pro Heroes Mt.
With such a stacked anime season, some series may have slipped through the cracks.

This season has been incredibly fruitful for anime to watch, whether they’re returning series or newly debuted ones. Surely, your watchlist is already stocked up thanks to the likes of Witch Hat Atelier , Go For It, Nakamura-kun!! , Daemons of the Shadow Realm , Re:ZERO -Starting Life in Another World- , Dr. STONE SCIENCE FUTURE , and more, but there may be a few series that slipped through the cracks. You might not have known about them, or just haven’t had the time to check them out, so let’s take a look at five anime that potentially flew under the radar and are certainly worth your time to give a try. KILL BLUE If you are a fan of Kuroko’s Basketball , you may be curious about the latest anime adaptation of Tadatoshi Fujimaki’s work. In KILL BLUE , an assassin is reverted back to being a middle schooler. Seeing Jugo Ogami navigate not only being a kid again, but also finding the joys of actually getting to attend middle school like a normal child, is one of the highlights of the series. On top of all of that, you get a lot of fight scenes that are a bit different than usual, given how Jugo has to utilize different strategies due to his smaller stature while trying not to alert other people to what he’s doing. There are a lot more wild characters and scenarios as the series progresses, all of which add to the ridiculous nature of the anime. MARRIAGETOXIN Going from one kind of assassin to another, it’s time to find out how hard it is to find someone to marry when you’re in that line of work. What’s the best way to find a partner? Hire cross-dressing marriage swindler, Mei Kinosaki, of course, especially if your marriage stops your sister from having to marry a man. A lot of the entertainment that comes out of MARRIAGETOXIN is watching Hikaru Gero learn how to date and seeing him become more whole as a person, but it does lead to a lot of awkward moments for him since he misses a lot of social cues. That said, the payoff for those awkward times is sweet scenes with him and the girl he’s on a date with at the moment, and his dynamic with Mei also adds to the series. Since this is an anime about an assassin, it means there are a lot of other assassins who Hikaru has to fight against. This leads to a lot of fun fight scenes where each participant uses their own unique powers against each other. Eren the Southpaw Eren the Southpaw starts off like most anime dramas, where it’s about high schoolers trying to find their way in the world, with the series focusing on the art world in particular. Then, it shifts to the characters as adults, and we see pretty quickly how life may not be how you imagined it when you were younger. After Koichi is astonished by Eren’s graffiti, their lives become intertwined from high school onwards. Koichi learns, however, that the world of art design is far more treacherous than he imagined, and he also does a pretty poor job of maintaining relationships with others. Meanwhile, Eren has her own struggles in college as she continues to try to find the best ways to demonstrate her art. It’s not as common to see a more adult drama pop up in anime, especially one that shows the characters growing up, but Eren the Southpaw offers that unique perspective this season. I Made Friends with the Second Prettiest Girl in My Class There’s a lot of cute stuff to be found in I Made Friends with the Second Prettiest Girl in My Class . In this anime, Maki and Umi become friends through their shared interest in B-movies of the horror genre, despite Maki feeling like he’s an outcast within their class and Umi being pretty popular. Their blooming friendship and subsequent realization of feelings are well earned throughout, although there are a few speed bumps along the way. You get a lot of good communication between the two as they’re able to help each other with their own individual problems. Whether that involves feelings of self-doubt, insecurities, guilt over the past, or trouble with other friends, they’re able to find ways together to resolve these issues in a way that makes sense. The spring season does have its fair share of romance, but this was the one I wanted to watch the next episode of as soon as possible. A Hundred Scenes of AWAJIMA When you read the description for A Hundred Scenes of AWAJIMA , it would be easy to assume it’s just a show about girls at a revue school — which is true, to an extent. The storytelling is where the series attempts to differentiate itself from everything else. Each episode follows different characters as we see how they navigate currently, or in the past, at the Awajima school and the ramifications afterwards. Sometimes these characters will be intertwined with other stories, but for the most part, this series acts somewhat as an anthology series would. There’s a lot of drama to digest as A Hundred Scenes of AWAJIMA doesn’t pull any punches on the ways teenagers will act toward one another in an ultra-competitive environment, how parents (and grandparents) will try to impart their own values to their children (and grandchildren), and why the actions of your youth can come back to haunt you later in adulthood.
