The film adapts the Siren Arc , a particularly popular story arc from the original manga series. The anime film adaptation of Kaori Mado’s romance novel Kimi to Hanabi to Yakusoku to ( You, Fireworks, and a Promise ) did not appear in the Top 10, but ranked 11th in its second weekend, according to Oricon News . After spending two straight weekends in 10th place, Detective Conan: Fallen Angel of the Highway did not appear in the Top 10 again in its 16th weekend. The 29th Detective Conan film's cumulative box office earnings reached 13.65 billion yen (83.36 million USD) in the 109 days since its release, and now ranks 27th in the Japanese box office all-time rankings.
Crunchyroll News speaks with the lead staff behind the upcoming Cyberpunk: Edgerunners season!

As someone who attended the Cyberpunk: Edgerunners premiere at Anime Expo 2022, coinciding with Studio TRIGGER’s 10th anniversary, I could hardly imagine the phenomenon that was just around the corner. While Studio TRIGGER is known for easily packing their panels every year they come, walking next door to see almost every seat of the 20,000-person arena filled felt like another milestone for the studio, CD Projekt Red and the Cyberpunk project as a whole. Following the premiere of the first episode of Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 and the TRIGGER panel at Anime Expo 2026, Crunchyroll News had the opportunity to speak with Edgerunners 2 director Kai Ikarashi alongside series writer and showrunner Bartosz Sztybor about what to expect in the hotly anticipated new season. Image courtesy of CD Projekt Red Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 wants to make something very, very clear: David is dead . But Night City is more than just about one person, as a new crew of characters exhibit other aspects of the city. The new cast includes Weak, a veteran Edgerunner nicknamed “King” who is still processing a past trauma; D, a netrunner looking for the murderer of his clan; Roman, a young boy who is obsessed with traditional filmmaking; and Talia, a Maelstrom member who has greatly altered her body with cybernetic implants. While these four may seem like they would never cross paths, Sztybor says that’s part of the series’ DNA tying back to classic 90s films. “I was thinking of the story of the 90s, and especially my favorite movies like Pulp Fiction . That was my pitch to TRIGGER, that it would be like Pulp Fiction and Leon the Professional in Night City," said Sztybor. "It was somehow organic that if it was like Pulp Fiction , it would be a wider cast of characters. We had a few characters, but then we started developing the story with TRIGGER. Some stayed, TRIGGER added some of theirs and we built the story from there. The plan was not to tell a story about several characters. It naturally evolved from the one inspiration. “I also wanted to somehow rhyme the second season with the first,” added Sztybor. “The initial idea — what I think is important for the noir and cyberpunk genre — was to show causes and consequences, much like Pulp Fiction and earlier movies by Robert Altman. Lots of characters show this in a good way: a thing that someone will do will have consequences on someone else.” Emblematic of the 90s drive of the story is also the style of the show itself, with Kai Ikarashi in the director’s chair for the new season. Introduced to fans with Episode 6 in the first season ( "Girl on Fire," which focused on the downfall of Maine), Ikarashi’s use of brightness, even to showcase cyberpsychosis and David’s thousand-yard stare became standout visuals. “Episode 6 is my favorite of the first season,” said Sztybor. “After I saw it, I already knew that Ikarashi-san is an amazing talent. The best episodes to me are the ones that are self-contained stories. It was not even in the script, but he made a little movie out of it. It added a huge depth to Maine, who is my favorite character from season one. On our end, we knew that Ikarashi-san is super talented, and our dream was to have him as director for season two.” But Ikarashi’s goal of “implementing the 90s anime soul” into Edgerunners 2 extends to the character design, with characters like D and Talia even having the classic hair “Air Intakes” (in Japanese fandom) or “Air Vents” (in English fandom). “Most importantly, I focused on the character designs,” said Ikarashi. “I am very intentional about the black silhouette lines on the characters to be prominent, and to leave ink blob-ish lines in the lines. I like to add particle-like effects to the lights. I was inspired by 90s American comics, as well, like Bill Sienkiewicz’s work on Daredevil .” While many classic 80s and 90s OVAs, and even the first Cyberpunk: Edgerunners , may show its hyper-violent action at night, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 is set during the day — a purposeful and strategic change for the team. In the first episode, King is shown going through a cyberpsychosis episode in the middle of the day, Talia first meets Roman after sunlight from his camera is reflected into her eye, and even D passes the hours by day drinking. But it’s through this almost misdirection of the daytime setting that showcases the realities and injustices of Night City more than dark alleyways ever could. “Light, or rays of light, can be perceived as something good or positive,” said Ikarashi. “But I want to note that it can also be misguided. I’ve played around a lot with how I used the source of light in Edgerunners 2 . I would like you to pay attention to that.” Roman, in particular, stands out amongst the cast as someone caught in-between worlds; whether that be between Night City’s day-and-night dichotomy or even between generations before and after him. A young filmmaker who is always looking for the latest scoop, not only for some side money, but also for the idealistic philosophy of a camera’s “truth,” Roman looks for meaning in a real world where the virtual stimulus of “braindance” is far more easily accessible. While the exact timeline of when Edgerunners 2 currently takes place is unknown, Roman’s interests lie far more in the ancient technology of 35mm cameras. “Weak is very much my character, but Roman is a character that connects all of us between myself, Ikarashi-san and [Masahiko] Otsuka-san,” said Sztybor. “He also shows my personal love to cinema. One thing is about truth, but another is about saving humanity through old cinema. Being against the new technology that takes away emotions or more takes away the magic. That’s [Roman’s] main reason to create. “On social media, a lot of people think that Roman will be like Nightcrawler (the movie), but for me it’s more like Cinema Paradiso ," added Sztybor. "It’s not about darkness, it’s about somehow saving humanity and the magic of cinema.” “Roman more priorities feelings and instincts, even if he appears logical,” said Ikarashi. “But he is a feelings-first type of character.” Will the characters of Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 each find their “truths,” whether that’s Weak’s perceived reality, D achieving his revenge, Talia through chrome or Roman through cinema? If the tone of the premiere panel was any indication, it may be a far harder path than imagined. But the characters’ thematic focus of the new season will certainly bring them on a different journey. “If season one was a Michael Bay movie, season two is more of a Martin Scorsese one,” said Sztybor on stage at the premiere panel. “I would like fans to be open,” Sztybor later added during the interview. “Season two is very similar, but totally different. After the reception of the trailers, character concepts and even the first episode at Anime Expo, I see their openness.” Oh, and Adam Smasher? Well, when asked to confirm or deny his appearance in Edgerunners 2 , we were told: “You need to wait to see.” Crunchyroll News would like to thank CD Projekt Red and Studio TRIGGER for the interview opportunity. Special thanks to Liam Dempsey for also contributing to this interview.

How Lah Kara became a symbol of hope and kindness

Since its debut in 1977, Star Wars has spent years asking what it means to be a Jedi. Iconic characters like Luke Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi have solved the case in turn, but every generation needs its own answer. In Star Wars: Visions Presents - The Ninth Jedi , supervising director Kenji Kamiyama (who anime fans may recognize from Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex or the recently announced Mobile Suit Gundam RG XARX-ZERO ) ushers in the franchise's new era with an answer of his own, and it's one that harkens back to the hopeful vision George Lucas originally crafted for Star Wars . For the veteran animator, his answer begins with Lah Kara, a young Force user whose journey to power defies the rigid traditions that famously restricted the Jedi Order. The character's introduction in Star Wars: Visions sparked global interest among fans in 2021. Her unorthodox journey proved that there is another path to becoming a Jedi, one that makes room for both darkness and light. This August, Kara's journey will continue in Star Wars: Visions Presents - The Ninth Jedi , a brand-new original series on Disney+. Crunchyroll spoke with Kamiyama ahead of their appearance at Anime Expo 2026 to unpack the power of Kara's unconventional Jedi journey, the challenge of legacy, and the real reason why hope matters more to Star Wars now than ever before. NOTE: This interview was interpreted on behalf of Lucasfilm Ltd. LLC. It has been edited for clarity. Looking at Star Wars: Visions and The Ninth Jedi , when you began work on the original anime, did you ever imagine that this story would grow into the phenomenon it has become? Kenji Kamiyama: Honestly, I did not expect this kind of phenomenon. There were many other fascinating shorts in the anthology, and I think the kinds of stories and anime that are popular in Japan and the United States are a little different. I was very curious to see how fans in the U.S. would react, especially core Star Wars fans. I was excited, but I was also a little nervous. Now that the series has become such a phenomenon, and The Ninth Jedi is getting its own solo series, what has that fan reception meant to you as the creator of this story? Kamiyama: First of all, I am very happy and grateful. There are many things Star Wars fans look for, so I felt the pressure of having to respond to those expectations. But I am also a big Star Wars fan. I believe that if I put my own feelings into the story, other fans will connect with them. I wanted to make a Star Wars story that I love and show it to everyone. That is what I thought. As you were working on the original anime, when did you realize that this was not just a short story, but that there was an entire universe within The Ninth Jedi that needed to be explored? Kamiyama: Whenever I make a short, I create entire backgrounds for the characters. For The Ninth Jedi , I developed the histories of Lah Kara, Lah Zhima, Margrave Juro, Ethan, Homen, the Sith characters, Gramps, and 99-99, or “Four-Nines.” I had already dug deeply into these characters. Because I had built out those character backgrounds, I felt I could continue their stories whenever I was given the green light. So when I received the offer to continue The Ninth Jedi , I was ready. Lah Kara is such an amazing Star Wars character and one of my favorites, along with Ahsoka. I feel that Kara represents an interesting new era for the Jedi. As you said earlier, you are a big Star Wars fan, so what do you think Kara brings to the Jedi as a character? Kamiyama: While making this story, I watched all of Star Wars from start to finish. I noticed the Jedi are traditionally very closely tied to the Jedi Order, so I wanted to rethink what a Jedi could be outside of that rigid structure. Sometimes, the Sith can seem like they’re freer or more immediately compelling, while the Jedi can feel constrained in comparison. I wanted Kara to move beyond that rigidity and show what a new kind of Jedi could be. A Jedi can have a dark side inside themselves, but they can overcome that inner darkness and become a true Jedi in spite of it. That is what I hope Kara can represent, especially with Nawaam as her counterpart. I want her to be a character who helps lead the way toward a new kind of Jedi Order. Speaking of Kara, there is an idea on social media here in America that she is the kind of Jedi Star Wars needs right now, in part because of her complex relationship with the dark side. Why do you think Kara is such a relatable character for fans? Kamiyama: I think it is very difficult to make a Jedi attractive as a character. If someone only does good things, that character can seem boring. Characters with inner conflict are often more compelling. Batman, for example, has a darkness within himself much like a villain, but he still tries to do good. Those kinds of characters are attractive to audiences. Kara exhibits a little of that darkness, but she also has a natural instinct to care about others. Once, I spoke with an American producer who used car accidents in the United States as an example when discussing characters. He said that after a crash, both sides may avoid apologizing because apologizing first could be seen as admitting fault by the law. Instead of speaking, the parties wait for the court to decide who was right or wrong, and that struck me as not very Jedi-like. I wanted to create a character who gets in an accident and immediately asks, “Are you okay? Are you hurt?” and who thinks about how the crash could have been prevented in the first place. That kind of immediate care for another person is important. Maybe that is one reason people are drawn to Kara: she naturally cares for others instead of waiting for a rule or an order to tell her to. I really love Kara. Kamiyama: I really love Kara, too. In The Ninth Jedi , you also get to play with one of the most iconic objects in pop culture: the lightsaber, as the anime changes its color and form in unique ways. When you were developing the original anime and now the new series, did you ever ask yourself, “Are we allowed to do this?” Kamiyama: I did not really think to myself, “Am I allowed to do this?” But part of me wondered whether someone might stop me from changing the rules of such an iconic object. I believe Lucasfilm was looking for something unique in Star Wars: Visions rather than simply repeating what already existed in Star Wars . They saw that this idea might create something interesting and lead to new possibilities, so Lucasfilm and the team said, “Let’s try it.” I am incredibly grateful that they allowed me to take on such a fun challenge. Of course, we are all looking forward to Star Wars: Visions Presents - The Ninth Jedi . Before the full series arrives, is there anything you would like fans to pay attention to if they rewatch the original short ahead of this upcoming release? Kamiyama: Kara’s story is only the beginning of the original story. At that point, she is not a Jedi, and she is not even a Padawan. She doesn’t yet understand her own power or her connection to the Force. But during the fight, one of the Jedi Hunters pursuing her recognizes that she has remarkable skill. There’s a sequence that hints at the 15 years Kara spent living with her father before the first short even began. There is an entire life behind the abilities Kara exhibits. Before watching the new series, I hope fans pay attention to that moment and imagine what Lah Kara and Lah Zhima were doing before this journey began. It will help you enjoy the series even more, and you may notice that some things were quietly set up from the very beginning. For my last two questions, at its core, Star Wars is a series about hope, in my opinion, and I feel that The Ninth Jedi embodies that beautifully. What do you think that message has kept Star Wars relevant? And why is the message of hope so important today? Kamiyama: That is a big question. Star Wars is a story about war, and war stories are easier to treat purely as entertainment when the real world is at peace. But right now, the world is in chaos. There are many concerns, such as generational and racial divisions, and there are wars happening around the world. In a time like this, portraying war as entertainment carries a lot more weight. I believe George Lucas included war in Star Wars to find and show hope for the world. That is very important to me. The Dark Side, with its intense action, may seem more entertaining on the surface, while justice and hope can be too straightforward. But with Kara, I really wanted to show the light side to audiences. I wanted to portray kindness and a sincere sense of justice. Kara has darkness within her, but she becomes a natural symbol of hope and kindness. I believe creators have a responsibility not only to make art entertaining, but also to bring hope and kindness into the world. That was always in my mind while making The Ninth Jedi , and I tried to portray it as honestly as possible. Finally, what are you most excited about when the show premieres? Is there a particular moment or character you are especially excited to see fans react to? Kamiyama: My biggest personal excitement is having as many fans as possible watch the show. Of course, this is a streaming show, and while Star Wars began as a film series, I do not think the format is what matters most. I created this show as though I were making one long film, staying true to the excitement I felt when I first saw Star Wars . I cannot convey any message unless people watch it, so I hope many fans will experience the show for themselves. That is my biggest hope and my greatest excitement.

From death metal to math rock

Death metal is awesome. That much, we can all agree on. But sometimes, you need a little break, you know? That’s exactly what three members of Tomb Mold did with their other project, Daydream Plus. With math rock grooves, city pop vibes, and infectious melodies, the mellower instrumental band has completely captivated fans of heavy music and other genres alike with their new album, Second Last Day of Summer . I spoke with guitarist Payson Power about flexing a slightly different creative muscle, retro anime, and NEEDING a guest spot from Fox Capture Plan after watching Rascal Does Not Dream Of Bunny Girl Senpai . Tell me a bit about the new album, Second Last Day of Summer ! Payson Power : Sure! At its core, Second Last Day Of Summer is a high-energy instrumental math rock record. Conceptually, it's an attempt to encapsulate the final carefree moments of any applicable moment in time before the haymaker of reality lands. You can't put your life on pause, so you need to make the most of the good parts... Yet the more you enjoy those times, the more you miss them when they're gone. Then you're right back to getting clobbered on the daily by an indifferent world. To varying degrees, it's a universal experience. There is a hapless affinity for nostalgia, poisonous as it may be, on display here. I have also personally struggled to completely enjoy anything without a hint of dread for what is around the corner. I tried my best to convey that prompt of anxiety musically on this record. That's just how I see it though, you can use it as a soundtrack to whatever you want. That's one of the great things about music without lyrics. Think of it as Lego without the instruction manual. What was the motivation to start this project? Power : After making aggressive music all my life I wanted to try something different. I’ve been fascinated by math rock since my early teens but never really tried writing anything but a few riffs here and there. This was a great chance to blend some of my more erratic melodic ideas with Midwestern emo and pop and make something that is atmospherically open to interpretation. Also, I wanted to use the clean channel on my amp. Was there any difference in your approach to creating this album than your heavier work? Power : Definitely. In Daydream, melody is the most important, followed by just a splash of unease. With Tomb Mold (my other band) we're free to get a lot weirder without derailing the songs. Both bands have a similar process of arrangement though, jamming the songs until the optimal version presents itself. Was anime on or around while you were recording? Power : Around the time of recording my wife and I watched Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood . Great show, the pacing is just about perfect. “Again” by Yui is one of my favourite OPs. Its melancholic energy is perfect for Ed and Al's journey. During the writing of the record I was watching Laid-Back Camp , Haikyu!! , and My Dress-Up Darling among others. Where did your anime journeys begin? Where are you on your journey now? Power : The first anime I ever saw was Sailor Moon in 1995, the English dub produced by DiC. I've still never watched it in Japanese as I just love the dub too much. A couple years after that I rented Perfect Blue on VHS from my local video store. It had a warning label on it due to disturbing content, so I just had to see it. It's my favorite work by Satoshi Kon, with Millennium Actress being a close second. My favorite current anime is JUJUTSU KAISEN . The latest arc was awesome, I especially loved the character of Higuruma. I am also loving Smoking Behind the Supermarket with You . The mini-episodes were so good, I’m super stoked for the rest of the series! Have you learned anything about music or art from watching anime? Power : Absolutely. I discovered the music of Fox Capture Plan as featured in Rascal Does Not Dream Of Bunny Girl Senpai and loved it, so I asked their keyboard player Ryo Kishimoto to play on our record. He's featured on our track “Metropolitan Mirage” and it's one of my favorite parts of the album. I've heard so much great music through anime over the years, it's very much shaped my listening habits. The artwork in anime such as Gunsmith Cats and Macross Plus have helped inspire the Daydream album covers, along with other Japanese artists like Hiroshi Nagai and Eizin Suzuki. I love to peruse background images from '90s anime especially, as they feel like they could be snapshots of an empty (and therefore perfect) world. Why do you think anime fans are drawn to heavy music and vice versa? Do you think city pop is a secret love of many heavy music fans? Power : That's a great question. If I had to guess, I'd say it would have something to do with the energy of both mediums. Shonen anime and heavy music are usually both exuberant and explosive, and they compliment each other well. Of course, there are other softer types of anime, and I think city pop or the more twinkly emo style bond well with the nostalgic melancholy of slice-of-life or romance anime. The appeal of city pop for me is how wistful it is. It's like a life you didn't live but somehow recognize. What is your watch list? Is tour a time you use to catch up on media you’ve been putting off? Power : We actually have never watched any shows on tour other than South Park and in the hotels, haha. A few of the shows on my watch list are Witch Hat Atelier , Mob Psycho 100 , and Nana . I’m going to rewatch Lucky Star soon as well, as I find it majorly relaxing even though it is a completely manic stream of dialogue. Which anime do you think Daydream Plus would fit with best? Power : I’m going to say Gunsmith Cats and Yokohama Shopping Log . They're a couple of the anime I had in the forefront of my mind when writing the album. I know it’s cheating to pick two answers but it had to be done. Both sleek action set pieces and blue sky loneliness are covered this way. If you could have any character from any anime join the band, who would it be and what would they do? Power : Maybe Pen Pen from Neon Genesis Evangelion on auxiliary percussion. Having a penguin on tambourine or shaker would be a great draw. Kon from Bleach would be awesome for the same reason. He wouldn't even need to play anything, he could just dance the whole time like the guy from the Mighty Mighty Bosstones. If I had to pick a human I'd say Todo from JUJUTSU KAISEN . He's very loyal and cool, plus I'm sure we could find a way to use Black Flash rhythmically. What is up next for the band? Power : We have a few gigs coming up, including our record release show on July 17th where we are playing the entire album in a convenience store. Looking forward to playing these songs live and inflicting maximum damage. Is there anything you’d like to plug or say to the Crunchyroll audience out there who may not be familiar with your music? Power : For sure! If you are a fan of any of the shows I mentioned, driving with only one hand on the wheel, Sega Dreamcast, going to the movies alone, or walking along the train tracks, check out our new record! And if you enjoy retro gaming, we also made a chiptune version of the album that is playable on an NES cartridge. I'm super proud of both versions and I hope you enjoy the music. Thanks goes out to Crunchyroll for the interview, and thank you for taking the time to read it! Listen to Second Last Day of Summer here . Keep up with Daydream Plus here .

The Even the Student Council Has Its Holes! anime is set to begin airing in October 2026. Even the Student Council Has Its Holes! Anime Character Trailer — Tan Otori Even the Student Council Has Its Holes! Anime Character Visual — Tan Otori Naoyuki Tatsuwa ( Harem in the Labyrinth of Another World ) directs the Even the Student Council Has Its Holes! anime at studio Passione, with series composition by Masahiro Yokotani ( Makeine: Too Many Losing Heroines! ) and character designs by Ryo Imamura ( ONIMAI: I'm Now Your Sister! ). Tatsuwa directed and Imamura provided the character designs for the series' animated promo video that went viral in 2024. Seven Seas Entertainment publishes Muchimaro's original manga in English and describes the story: In a student council filled with weirdos, one new member is about to have a hell of a school year! Mizunoe Ume just wanted to avoid repeating a grade when he joined the student council. After all, it seemed like an easy fix to his current academic problems. But then, he met his fellow council. Each of them is eccentric in their own way—one’s an airhead, another’s scary, one’s secretly a pervert, but all in all, they’re just really weird! Yet somehow, they’re also oddly cute and endearing. Which means Mizunoe is stuck with them and all the chaos they bring to the table. Get ready for a slice-of-life manga that’s irresistibly charming, quirky and a little bit naughty!
To commemorate the 30th anniversary of the Martian Successor Nadesico anime, the series launched an official website and X (formerly Twitter) account . More information about the 30th-anniversary project is scheduled to be announced in the coming year. The message on the X post reads: "Nadesico 30th Anniversary launching. Has it really been 30 years since those days when we laughed together, saying 'Baka Bakka'!? The records of comrades who fought, were wounded, and yet kept moving forward continue to shine within this ship even now. Everyone, please gather at the boarding gate. Another year of fully enjoying the world of 'Martian Successor Nadesico' is beginning!" The Martian Successor Nadesico anime series was directed by the late Tatsuo Sato ( who passed away in April of this year ) at Xebec (of the Fafner series). The TV anime aired for 26 episodes from October 1996 to March 1997. A sequel feature film, Martian Successor Nadesico: Prince of Darkness , released in August 1998. In October 2016, a special screening event was hosted to celebrate the 20th anniversary. As a kickoff event to celebrate the 30th anniversary, the "Starchild Night VOL.1 Martian Successor Nadesico" talk event will be held on August 28 at LOFT/PLUS ONE in Tokyo. This talk event is part of a rebranding project by King Records for its own anime titles, and Nadesico has been selected as the theme for the very first installment. The event will feature members of the original cast and staff, including voice actor Yuji Ueda (the voice of the protagonist Akito Tenkawa), Nobuyoshi Habara (Storyboards, Animation Direction, and Key Animation), Takatoshi Chino (Production Manager), Shinichi Ikeda (Producer) and Go Nakanishi (Assistant Director). Crunchyroll streams both the Martian Successor Nadesico TV anime and the sequel feature film Martian Successor Nadesico: Prince of Darkness , and describes the series as such: The Jovian Invaders have destroyed our base on Mars, wiped out our space fleets, and now only one ships stands between Earth and Totally Annihilation! Privately funded by the mysterious Nergal Corporation, the High Mobile Battleship Nadesico is the most formidable fighting machine ever conceived, but due to a shortage of trained soldiers the crew is a little unorthodox. Against an assistant cook as a pilot, a general's daughter in command, and the largest contingent of geeks and misfits ever sent into orbit, the poor Jovians won't stand a chance!
It's a highlight of the summer 2026 season!

The summer 2026 anime season is packed, and among the most-awaited titles is Jaadugar: A Witch in Mongolia . This historical series focuses on Sitara, a young girl who becomes fascinated by learning and the knowledge she obtains from it. Because of this, she’s able to use it to her advantage when all hope seems lost. Jaadugar is not only packed with an interesting storyline but has a fantastic creative team behind it, so if you’re planning on adding this to your Crunchyroll watchlist, read ahead to get a little more information. What Is Jaadugar: A Witch in Mongolia ? Jaadugar: A Witch in Mongolia tells the story of Sitara, a young girl from Persia in the thirteenth century. After her mother dies and she is forced away from her homeland, Sitara is sold as a slave to a family of scholars. However, what seems like a bad situation becomes an interesting one. The family, including the young heir Muhammad, who is on his own quest for higher learning, eventually persuades the rebellious young girl to devote her life to reading and studying. From there, Sitara becomes passionate about the pursuit of knowledge. However, her new home is not meant to last forever: An invading nomadic Mongol army captures her and destroys her city. Everything she’d built, many of the new people she met, and the new life of learning that she acquired seem in ruins. Sitara is now lost in the world once more, taken under the control of the Mongols as they head toward their base. It takes a while for Sitara to come to grips with her life again. However, in time, Sitara decides to enact a plan of vengeance. And she’ll have help from some unlikely sources. What Is Jaadugar: A Witch in Mongolia Based On? Jaadugar: A Witch in Mongolia is loosely inspired by the real-life story of a woman from the Mongol empire who used her intelligence and cleverness to alter the workings of the government in unexpected ways. Its original manga, A Witch’s Life in Mongol , is written and illustrated by Tomato Soup. It began serialization in 2021 on the Souffle publishing website, but has been found in the pages of Mystery Bonita magazine since 2025. American readers can purchase volumes of A Witch’s Life in Mongol from Yen Press. Who Is Producing the Jaadugar: A Witch in Mongolia Anime? The Jaadugar: A Witch in Mongolia anime is being produced by Science SARU, the studio behind the films of Masaaki Yuasa and recent hit TV series like Devilman Crybaby , Keep Your Hands Off Eizouken! and DAN DA DAN . Its executive director is Naoko Yamada, the director of K-On!! and The Colors Within . Meanwhile, its director is Abel Góngora, who was recently nominated alongside Fuga Yamashiro for a Best Director Anime Award for DAN DA DAN ’s second season. Kanichi Kato, of Black Clover , handles the series composition, and Kenichi Yoshida, who oversaw character designs on Eureka Seven , takes on character designs and chief animation, with music by Koshiro Hino. Where Can I Watch Jaadugar: A Witch in Mongolia ? The subtitled version of the first two episodes of Jaadugar: A Witch in Mongolia debuted on July 4th, 2026. The English dubbed version later premiered on July 18th, 2026. Both versions can be watched on Crunchyroll. New episodes will premiere on Saturdays throughout the summer 2026 anime season. Why Should I Watch Jaadugar: A Witch in Mongolia ? When you combine the pedigree of the creative team and its studio with the historical source material and curious approach, Jaadugar: A Witch in Mongolia feels like a must-watch of the summer 2026 anime season. From the very first episode, the use of color and shading is eye-catching, and the way the series frames faces as outlets for the personality turns every expression into an important one. As such, Jaadugar ratchets up the personability of its subjects. When Sitara falls in love with learning, so do you. You feel her aspiration, and then her pain, and the story becomes one to be involved with rather than an age-old one merely being retold. If you’re into anime with unconventional (for the anime medium) art styles or cultural deep dives that try to remain era-appropriate, Jaadugar is worth a shot.

This marks the fourth selection for Director Kore-eda

The official website for the upcoming live-action film adaptation of Tatsuki Fujimoto's Look Back manga announced today that the film was officially selected for the Competition section of the 83rd Venice International Film Festival (held in Venice, Italy) in September. The Venice International Film Festival is considered one of the big three film festivals in the world, alongside the Cannes Film Festival and the Berlin International Film Festival. Two Japanese films have been selected for this year's Competition section, with the other being Shinya Tsukamoto's Mr. Nelson, Did You Kill People? . Both films will compete for the Golden Lion, the festival's top prize. The results are scheduled to be announced on September 12. This marks director Hirokazu Kore-eda's fourth participation in the festival and his selection for the Competition section for the first time in seven years, following Maborosi (1995), The Third Murder (2017), and The Truth (2019). Natsuki Deguchi and Aju Makita, who co-starred in the leading roles, are scheduled to visit the venue alongside Director Kore-eda during the festival. This will be the first time Deguchi and Makita will attend the Venice International Film Festival, as well. Look Back is not the first live-action film based on a Japanese manga to be selected for the Competition section of the Venice International Film Festival. Since 2000, Katsuhiro Otomo's Mushishi (2006), based on the manga by Yuki Urushibara, and Sion Sono's Himizu (2011), based on the manga by Minoru Furuya, were both selected for the section, though both missed out on the top prize. The original Look Back manga by Tatsuki Fujimoto was published on Shueisha's Shonen Jump+ in 2021, and its anime film adaptation was released in Japan in June 2024. The live-action film, directed by Hirokazu Kore-eda, known for directing Shoplifters in 2018, is scheduled to release in Japan on September 11, 2026 . Natsuki Deguchi and Aju Makita co-star in the live-action film, with Deguchi playing the role of Fujino and Makita playing the role of Kyomoto. Meanwhile, Furi Nanase plays the childhood version of Fujino, and Rikka Okada plays the childhood version of Kyomoto. Daiju Koide, who produced Shin Kamen Rider , is producing the film at K2 Pictures. GKIDS previously announced it will release the movie in the United States, Canada, United Kingdom and Ireland. K2 Pictures describes the story of the film as such: Fujino, a young girl with complete confidence in her talent for drawing manga, and Kyomoto, a reclusive classmate whose artistic ability far surpasses her own, are brought together by their shared passion for creating manga. As in the original work, the film follows the thirteen-year journey of the two characters from their elementary school days onward, portraying it with remarkable sensitivity and a vivid sense of youth.
