Roguelike “Dark Bishoujo Action” game is due out on November 5

FURYU CORPORATION continues its “Dark Bishoujo Action” CRY series later this year with a new entry titled CRYMELIGHT . Set after the events of CRYSTAR (2018) and CRYMACHINA (2023), CRYMELIGHT is coming to PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch 2 and PC (Steam) on November 5. This one features a roguelike action structure, and staff members include plot and story supervisor Naoki Hisaya and composer Sakuzyo of the CRY series along with animator Riri Yamashita ( CRYMACHINA , Varlet ) and character designer YOGISYA . You can see the debut trailer below. CRYMELIGHT Announcement Trailer FURYU breaks down some of the key features: Wonderland and the Tea Party Traverse between two distinct realms: “Wonderland” — A prison where the souls of the dead are held captive — and "The Tea Party"— A sanctuary offering respite to young girls burdened by their sins. At the Tea Party, in between conversations with the characters she meets along the way, Alice can confess and atone for sins accumulated during combat, allowing her to acquire enhancement items and power-ups. Blend Exhilaration With Strategy in Combat Defeating enemies in combat triggers a burst of energy, and as their final cries dissipate, a shimmering blue-violet space — the “Wonder Dimension” — unfolds beneath players’ feet. The more this space expands, the more player abilities are amplified, accelerating movement and tactical maneuvers. Furthermore, the specific skills players acquire alter the scope and nature of these enhancements, dynamically transforming a player’s entire combat style. Smart players will be able to use this system to turn the tide of battles and expand the battlefield itself, utilizing space as smartly as possible. The Cards You’ve Drawn Between stages, players collect “Skill Cards” in a poker-style build system, ultimately forming a set of five cards. The stronger the poker combination players assemble, the more potent the hand’s effects become—dramatically altering both the impact of attacks and the flow of movement. Play Your Way Finally, players can switch between “World-Immersion Mode” (which minimizes UI, prioritizes certain visual effects, and keeps the camera closer with a side-angle view) and “Action Mode” (which pulls the camera back to a top-down perspective, keeps critical UI elements visible, and prioritizes combat and action). Clearing a stage rewards players with skill cards that when combined with cards in Alice’s hand, multiply Alice’s strength in combat. Dying sends Alice back to the Tea Party Hall to plan her next descent. Source: Press release

As the title suggests, the song features suis, the vocalist of Japanese rock band Yorushika, as a guest vocalist. And the video featuring original characters named Uto and Row was created by Kukka, who has collaborated with Eve on several videos, including "Gunjo Sanka" and "Hana Arashi." Eve "Kaze no Anthem feat. suis from Yorushika" Music Video Witch Hat Atelier Anime Creditless Opening Video "Kaze no Anthem feat. suis from Yorushika" released digitally on April 14, ranking #14 in Oricon's weekly digital single charts . Eve and suis shared the following comments on the anime's official website about the song: From Eve: It is a great honor to be a part of this wonderful story, "Witch Hat Atelier." I believe that magic is not some special power, but something that resides within the hands of everyone who continues to draw their dreams. Through the "resonance" we share with others, even lonely nights spent wandering and past regrets and mistakes become threads that weave together into the future. I asked suis-san to sing about hoping for the same dawn from the opposite end. May this song become an anthem for everyone who seeks to draw their own light through the magic of music. From suis: I love how the girls in the story discover a new magic of hope by connecting and resonating with one another. The song Eve-san created was brimming with a magical beauty woven from tenderness, and from the very first moment I heard it, I thought, "I want to be showered with this at the opening of s during the opening of "Witch Hat Atelier!" I also wanted to bring the warmth and strength I hold within me to that moment and resonate with it. I also wanted to bring warmth and strength in the hands, hoping to resonate with everyone. And if this anthem song can bring a little hope to your daily lives… that would be truly magical and wonderful. Please look forward to it! Digital jacket Kamome Shirahama began serialization of the original Witch Hat Atelier manga in Kodansha's Morning Two publication in July 2022, with 16 volumes released in Japan to date. Kodansha USA also publishes an English-language version of the series. Ayumu Watanabe directs the TV anime at animation studio BUG FILMS, with assistant direction by Jun Shinohara, series composition by Hiroshi Seko, character designs and chief animation direction by Kairi Unabara, and music by Yuta Kitamura. Crunchyroll streams Witch Hat Atelier and describes the story: In a world where only witches can cast magic, they must avoid being seen by ordinary people while casting. While Coco does her chores, she daydreams of becoming a witch. When a young witch named Qifrey visits her village, Coco uncovers the “absolute secret,” becomes Qifrey’s apprentice, and begins her studies. This is the story of children who encounter despair, yet reach out toward hope. Source: Eve official YouTube channel

When you listen to The Callous Daoboys, you’ll be immediately questioning every decision you've made before that wasn’t listening to them. The band’s throwback yet modern sound blends mathcore grooves(?) with poppier sensibilities for a sound unlike any other. With the new single “Gigantic Parasite Tongue” following up the smash hit 2025 album I Don’t Want to See You In Heaven , all of the years of playing shows across the globe are reaping their just rewards. To celebrate their success, vocalist Carson Pace and guitarist Dan Hodsdon spoke with me to talk Berserk , learning music theory from Cowboy Bebop , and their anime favorites. So obviously the place to start is with the new album. How does it feel to finally have it out in the world? How long have you been kind of sitting on it? Give me the whole story. Dan Hodsdon : We've been sitting on it since, I mean, a lot of these songs were almost done, probably mid 2024, and a good chunk of them were still in I'd say maybe 75 percent through like demo stages in 2023. I might be wrong, but I feel like at least one of them was considered for the EP at one point. But it was a lot of songs that were eventually moved over to being for the next album. I remember it going through changes, from the title, theme, track listing, and some of these songs were conceptualized back in 2022, if not earlier. Carson Pace : We've had some version of “Full Moon Guidance” since like 2021. So that sounds about right to me. I feel like we kind of always knew what the album was but we couldn't really put it together until 2024. I still, like, don't really believe that it's out, if that makes sense. I’m still struggling with that idea that it's real and that it exists. Seeing it on vinyl made me feel a little bit more like it was real. But at the same time, it's weird, I don't really know how to describe it. It's a little weird that it's real. Hodsdon : Yeah, I still feel like it's gonna come out next week, like it's not fully ready yet. Pace : That being said, there's nothing I would change about it at all. I think it's perfect. Hodsdon : Yeah. Agreed. Pace : Well, thank you! Our team always says that good art isn’t released, it escapes. I’m sure it feels a bit like that. Pace : Yeah, definitely. It doesn't belong to us anymore. It belongs to the people that like it and treasure it and I was already on to the next thing, at this point, which was the single we just put out. Behind this Zoom page, I have Logic open, and I'm working on a new song for us. I don't like resting on my laurels. I like starting something new. Did you start any new anime series while you were writing or recording? Was anime around or on while all of that was happening? Pace : Always. During this process I finally finished Neon Genesis Evangelion , watched the movie and started the rebuilds. That was a pretty big inspiration, I'd say. Attack on Titan wrapped up while I was writing back when Dan was talking about. It both feels like it finished up yesterday and also 10 years ago. That was like something that I absolutely was keeping up with. And then my favorite anime of all time is Berserk . And I watch that probably once or twice a year. Berserk ’97, yeah, not the new one. Hodsdon : I started Trigun again, and I also watched… I think when Marty was at the house tracking drums, we watched the Cowboy Bebop movie for the first time. I showed Marty that because he had finished the actual series and I'm like, “Have you seen the movie?” He's like, “I didn't know there was a movie, do we need to watch the movie right now?” And so we watched that. I need to go back and actually finish Trigun . I watched it when I was a kid and it's that same, like, era of Cowboy Bebop almost where there's a very distinct look to those, and a very distinct feel to those older series that a lot of things don't really capture these days. There's riffs galore in that soundtrack, too. It made me revisit the soundtrack. It's really fun. Do you think anything from what you were watching? I know you even just called out Evangelion influencing the lyrics. But do you think anything more subconscious ended up in the album as well, just from having it on and having it around, or just being a fan forever? Carson : I think I always want to write some hard sh*t, and Berserk is the hardest anime of all time, and Evangelion has the religious imagery and so much more. It always is having a hand in some sort of way. I don't know, I'm kind of a normie when it comes to anime. Dan's in way deeper than I am, so I would hesitate to say that it played a role subconsciously, but I think that any art that I consume and enjoy plays a role subconsciously. Hodsdon : It would probably have to just go back to the soundtracks, at least with like some of the old Cowboy Bebop one. I would study those songs like when I was still playing bass a lot for corporate bands, jazz bands, this, that, and the other thing because they follow pretty, I don't want to say standard, but they're jazz songs. They're bebop tracks, and I was actually studying some of the lines from those. In a weird way, they helped kind of develop my playing. But in terms of the J-pop and J-rock style of a lot of soundtracks, it’s cool to hear a lot of rolled back tones, and not just super heavy over the top stuff that you might get from like Maximum The Hormone. I know they did the Chainsaw Man song and I want to say I might be forgetting another band that did an opening for an anime recently, but just in terms of tonal stuff. A lot of those old soundtracks, and even some of the newer soundtracks will influence when I'm dialing in tones for our tracks live. I’ll pay attention to what sits good in a mix and what doesn't. Would you even say that you've learned something about music from anime music just in general? I don't know chord progressions or more of the mixing side like you just mentioned. Hodsdon : I heard Cowboy Bebop make bebop music before I knew what bebop actually was. And then I had to actually study it in school, I'm like, “Oh, this is like the anime, and they’re just like me.” And Carson, I'm sure you probably heard some noises that people were making in shows and were like, "I want to do that.” Pace : Sure. I mean, I think music from that part of the world in general has a lot of that stuff going on where I'm like, how the hell are they doing that? One of my favorite bands ever, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, has some of the coolest synth lines I've ever heard. And also the guy that screams in that band has like the most vicious high scream I've ever heard. Asia just makes such incredible music that that's always been an influence on me, and I guess I don't strictly call it anime music, because that feels a little reductive. But you know, for sure, like just J-Rock, J-Pop even I like a little k-pop here and there. It’s absolutely always an influence. Your shows tend to bring together a lot of people that like anime, and the overall heavy music scene in general is filled with anime fans. Why do you think those two go so well together? Hodsdon : I think there might be something. It's something I've noticed with some music, is that it sometimes feels very much larger than life, and it sometimes doesn't feel like something that was made by people. I'm not going to immediately say that's what our music sounds like. But as Carson mentioned, Evangelion and Berserk are two stories that feel they're huge and massive. There's a giant world based around it that isn't always explained right away within the media you’re watching. Even if you're reading the manga you won't get the full story, and it leaves a lot of, like, speculation and guessing and creating your own canon. There’s some bands that have that kind of mythos around them, like The Mars Volta. They’re a really good example of a band that has a mythos around it, that you're not always getting the full picture. You're getting a very like cut out version of what Cedric and Omar are writing music about, and there's a lot to theorize about, even if they're very explicitly like, “Hey, this is about our friend dying.” Which may be true, but there's a lot more around the story, especially something like Bedlam and Goliath which is based around their stories involving a ouija board. Even from the recording of how they got that album to exist. There's a whole story around that as well. And I think anime especially does stuff like that perfectly. Perfect Blue is the one that comes to mind for being larger than life. There's something about stories like that where it has to, I don't want to say they're like functional narratives, but they make a lot of sense within their given world, and you have to go along with the rules there, even if they're not going to bother explaining it. That’s part of the fun. And I'm drawn to a lot of bands and music that have that same kind of feel. So I think that might be sometimes why some people really enjoy heavy music and also anime at the same time, because there's a connection there of big stories. But through a small lens. Where did you both start with anime? Pace : Where do my origins start with anime? The first thing I think I tried to watch was Fist of the North Star . It was so weird and awesome. I think my friends that had been recommended Fist of the North Star were like, it was so aggressively, not for them. And I was like, I think this is pretty cool. I rock with this. There's a lot of weird stuff that I really liked, just media in general. I kind of gravitate toward the outsider stuff, the weird sh*t. I dated somebody in high school who was really into Miyazaki films. Spirited Away very quickly became one of my favorite movies. And I love Howl's Moving Castle . I think the big awakening for me was Satoshi Kon. Paprika is one of the best movies ever made. I think Perfect Blue is unreal. I had some friends try to get me into Death Note in high school, and I think that I was like, well, everybody likes Death Note . So I'm not going to get into that. And then when I watched it and I was like, well, obviously, this is amazing. Berserk was introduced to me by my best friend. It unlocked this thing in me that I had never felt before, which was the realization that something could be so beautiful and so chaotic and so messed up that it felt it was one of the first times where I felt like something was made exclusively for me. This is everything that I like. This is everything that I find interesting in a piece of art. That it set the rubric for me with creating my own art. The visceral elements along with like the beauty of the soundtrack, and even the way that show moves where it's not the highest budget anime of its time at all, but like the way it moves is so interesting and haunting. I just love it. It really did set the rubric for what I wanted to create was like something visceral and beautiful and meaningful, and messed up yet so impactful. Not just gross for the sake of being gross. Hodsdon : I didn't like anime initially and I kind of just fell into it accidentally. A friend made me watch Death Note front to back while we both had the flu and I remember hating it. It just didn't click for me for a really long time. It wasn't until probably high school that I saw the Berserk Golden Age movies. I loved them because it was just such a compelling story. I knew nothing about Berserk leading into it. And I just watched those movies maybe five times over a weekend because I was just so enthralled by it. And I felt there was something new I would catch every single time I watched it, and then from there I went into a big rabbit hole, and I got into a lot of manga and anime around that time. I remember getting into JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure a little bit around then, too. Also seeing hilarious clips from Fist of the North Star like Carson mentioned. That show is just intense for almost no reason. Half the time, like a guy gets punched very lightly and then explodes. It's awesome. And then JoJo ’s is just large, beautiful men killing each other. Again also amazing, and also another example of everything in that universe functions specifically for that universe, and it tries its best to explain it. But it half the time doesn't really need to be explained. I think probably the one that stuck with me the most recently is Dorohedero , because that’s the quintessential example of the fact that it never bothers explaining why things are happening. It just is happening. And it's a really fun and kind of gross and raunchy, but also very absurd world that everyone lives in. I've probably reread that story 10 times at this point. It's one of my favorite series, period. It's a really good example of being able to write a raunchy story that's gross and very gory. It stops a little short of where Berserk will take things to. But it does a really good job of having a clear vision and building upon things while remaining in its own universe and not trying to relate to the outside world that we live in. It's just this is the story. This is what you get. I think that sh*t rules. If you had to add an additional Daoboy, and it had to be an anime character, who would you want it to be? What would they do? Pace : Can I add somebody as security? Hodsdon : Yeah that's it. It’ll be Dio from JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure . Pace : Or I’m adding the opera singer from Magnetic Rose as sort of a second vocalist to my counterpart. She’s my counterpart on stage. It wouldn't be good but it would be interesting. As part of the 20th anniversary project for the anime series , the film is set to release in Japan on June 26, 2026 . The trailer features the film's theme song "Kashippanashi Destiny" sung by ano. Shin Gekijoban Keroro Gunsou: Fukkatsushite Sokkou Chikyu Metsubou no Kiki de Arimasu! Main Trailer The website also confirmed that Jesse, a member of the Japanese boy idol band SixTONES, voices two new original characters for the film: Aruru and Deruru. Jesse, who is voicing a character in a Japanese anime for the first time, posted the following comment: I really enjoyed playing the dual roles of Aruru and Deruru! At first, I was so nervous I thought I might lose it, but as I performed over and over, I started to get the hang of it and was even able to add ad-lib a bit. I was so happy that Director Fukuda laughed too! Both Aruru and Deruru are such great characters that I hope you’ll enjoy the story from start to finish without ever figuring out, "Wait, was that actually Jesse?" And I was really excited to learn that this story involves facing the biggest threat in the series yet! I’m so happy to be part of this "Sgt. Frog" franchise, featuring such stellar cast members and Director Fukuda’s spice! Please enjoy the various storylines and characters! Aruru and Deruru are my favorites! Everyone, I’ll be waiting for you at the theater! Aruru Deruru Yuichi Fukuda — best known for his directorial works for live-action film adaptations of popular Japanese manga such as Gintama , The Disastrous Life of Saiki K. , Wotakoi: Love Is Hard for Otaku , Saint Young Men , and most recently, UNDER NINJA — serves as general director on his own screenplay. Fumitoshi Oizaki, who has worked on the Sgt.Frog anime series as character designer since the first TV series in 2004, serves as director alongside character designer Satoshi Koike. BN Pictures works on anime production. The five original voice cast members will reprise their roles in the film. The original Sgt. Frog manga by artist Mine Yoshizaki is serialized in Kadokawa's Monthly Shonen Ace magazine since 1999. The manga's first TV anime adaptation began airing in Japan in April 2004 until April 2011. All 357 episodes are available on Crunchyroll from Discotek Media. The new film is described as such (translated): The Keroro Platoon, living their lazy days as if invasion were nothing. Then one day, they face a series of bizarre phenomena erupting across the nation. Feeling a sense of crisis, the Keroro Platoon rises up, staking their pride as invaders! What is the meaning of the mysterious symbols they encounter wherever they go—. The largest-scale battle in the history of "Sgt.Frog" begins in the Reiwa era! Source : Sgt.
The first chapter releases in Japanese theaters on May 15

72-year-old veteran voice actor Shigeru Chiba was confirmed to reprise his role as Shigeo Shiba in Patlabor EZY , the upcoming new anime series from the Mobile Police Patlabor franchise. The news was revealed during the premiere stage greeting event for Mobile Police Patlabor EZY File 1 , held on April 23 at the Shinjuku Piccadilly theater in Tokyo. Director Yutaka Izubuchi, Sumire Uesaka (the voice of Towa Kuga), and Kikunosuke Toya (the voice of Kippei Atori) took the stage at the event, and Chiba made a surprise appearance. Shigeo Shiba is a mechanic of the Special Vehicle Section 2, Division 2 of Tokyo Metropolitan Police, who is the de facto second-in-command to Seitaro Sakaki, the head mechanic of the SV2. The character has appeared in the Patlabor anime ever since the first OVA series released in 1988. Chiba not only voiced Shiba in the anime series, but also portrayed the character in the live-action sequel series, The Next Generation: Patlabor , released from 2014 to 2015. As of this reporting, Chiba is the only cast member confirmed to be reprising a role from the original series. At the event, it was also revealed that film director Shinji Higuchi ( Shin Godzilla, Shin Ultraman ) contributed storyboards to this new anime series, and that Mamoru Oshii — a founding member of HEADGEAR, the creator group that launched the Patlabor project — was also credited in a certain title. The eight-episode series Patlabor EZY will release in Japanese theaters with three chapters. "File 1" will release on May 15, 2026, "File 2" on August 14, 2026, and "File 3" in March 2027. Episodes 1 through 6, presented in "File 1" and "File 2," are standalone episodes in an anthology format. Episodes 7 and 8 in "File 3" will tell a continuous story. Based on original work by HEADGEAR, Yutaka Izubuchi directs Patlabor EZY at animation studio J.C. Staff. Kazunori Ito provides the scripts and series composition, Takamitsu Sato provides the character designs and chief animation direction, Yasutomo Moriizumi provides the CG direction, and Kenji Kawai provides the music. GAZEN produces the CG, while GENCO oversees general production. The main voice cast members also include: Saki Hirata voiced by Ami Koshimizu (Sailor Jupiter in Sailor Moon Crystal ) Akihiko Hazama voiced by Ahikahiro Kobayashi (Saichi Sugimoto in Golden Kamuy ) Yuta Yanai voiced by Setsuji Sato (Zakkurin in You and Idol Precure ) Hachikuma Yuzuki voiced by Yume Matsumura Kimika Saeki voiced by Megumi Hayashibara (Rei Ayanami in Neon Genesis Evangelion ) The synopsis reads (translated): In the late 1990s, alongside rapid technological advancement, the versatile humanoid work machines known as "Labor" advanced into every field. However, this also gave rise to a new social threat: Labor crimes. To counter the escalating Labor crimes, the Metropolitan Police Department established the Special Vehicle Section 2 within its Security Department. This marked the birth of the Special Vehicles Division 2 Patrol Labor Unit, commonly known as "Patlabor." And so, time passed... By the 2030s, Japan's workforce was in steady decline, with automation driven by AI technology advancing rapidly. "Labor," which was the once cutting-edge technology, had become firmly established as part of the social infrastructure. Standalone, piloted Labors were increasingly being replaced by autonomous robots, becoming obsolete. But no matter how times change, the work of Special Vehicle Section 2 remains the same: protecting people and the city. Division 2, alongside the AV-98Plus Ingram—a tuned-up version of the outdated Type AV 98 Ingram—faces new technological crimes with wisdom and courage.
Orbitals is a Video Game Love Letter to Retro ‘80s and ‘90s Anime

Preview and interview included

Orbitals is a co-op adventure game that follows two young space explorers named Maki and Omura as they go on an intergalactic adventure to save their home. Its art direction is inspired by 1980s and ‘90s anime, emphasizing hand drawn animations and thick lines. It’s a striking visual style that helps it stand out amongst other anime-inspired games. Orbitals is also a Nintendo Switch 2 exclusive and is set to launch later in 2026. I sat down with Orbitals developer Shapefarm to play one hour of the game, as well as speak with the studio about its artistic process, how it’s making its colorful debut with an original IP, and its stance on how modern technology impacts development. Inspired by the Greats Creative director Marcos Ramos tells me that Dragon Ball was not only an aesthetic inspiration for Orbitals , but also an atmospheric one. “Our game has a lot of the early Dragon Ball vibe of when Goku was a kid,” he explained. “This idea of going on an adventure, making friends, and encountering challenges along the way. There are some dark moments and then some other happy, wacky moments.” Ramos also mentions that Neon Genesis Evangelion was an inspiration as well. While the iconic series has cool mechs and fight scenes, they’re used as backdrops to tell a deep and philosophical story about psychological trauma and depression in a tactile way. Although Orbitals definitely looks to be taking things in a much brighter direction than Evangelion , Ramos wants to adapt a similar framework: Use the setting and characters as vehicles (or spaceships?) to tell an impactful story. “We don't have huge mechs or anything like that, and our game is not about the topics that it discusses,” Ramos said. “But every level is executed to the highest degree, and that's hugely inspirational to us.” When Orbitals ’ intro and main menu appeared, I was completely enamored by it. The opening track is sung by Mami Ayukawa, who’s best known for the opening songs in Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam . The character portraits, logos, and vibrantly thick outlines perfectly captured that ‘80s anime vibe. For me, it was like experiencing Persona 5 ’s jaw-dropping intro and main menu for the first time back in 2017. “We wanted the first experience you have to feel really special and different,” Ramos explained. TV commercial transitions were a big influence too. Back then, engaging and eye-catching animations were created to indicate when a show was back from a commercial break. These included things like characters breaking the fourth wall by punching the screen. “They did a very good job at getting me excited to come back, and that's the feeling that we wanted to reproduce,” he said. Shapefarm collaborated with animation company Studio Massket to develop the cutscenes and art direction. When I saw the hand-drawn storyboard cells during a studio tour, I was floored at how many there were. It was a thick pile of paper containing drawings from storyboard artist Hidetoshi Yoshida, who had previously worked on shows like Demonbane and Shinobi no Ittoki . Yoshida is a legendary animator, and while modern day storyboard anime productions are mostly done digitally, Yoshida is old school. As a result, he decided to storyboard the entirety of Orbitals by hand. It’s a painstaking approach in an age where advancements in technology have made the process easier, but it’s also one that’s necessary to convey the authentic era that Orbitals is inspired by. We also can’t ignore the elephant in the room. The advent of artificial intelligence has not only affected video game and anime industries, but virtually every aspect of our lives. There are studios utilizing generative AI in their work in some sort of fashion during development, but Shapefarm isn’t caving into that pressure. “Personally and company-wide, we don't use any kind of generative AI,” Ramos confirmed. “We have a passion for making things with our own hands and getting dirty.” Sticking to Your Guns Orbitals opens up with a lengthy introduction cutscene showing Maki and Omura as kids, surviving a space station accident before jumping to the present where they’re in their current home. During gameplay, one player controls Maki while another controls Omura, and they solve puzzles by using several different guns and gadgets. One player, for example, can use the Scraphook gun to pull out platforms while the partner jumps onto them to advance through the level. The beginning puzzles felt intuitive and fun to figure out. At least in the opening hours, there’s a good balance in difficulty. The puzzles weren't too hard to solve, but they also didn’t insult my intelligence. If the gameplay sounds incredibly similar to co-op games like Hazelight Studios’ It Takes Two and Split Fiction , that’s not entirely a coincidence. Orbitals game director Jakob Lundgren was previously a level designer at Hazelight, so his background is a perfect fit for a game like Orbitals . Initially, Shapefarm allowed it to be completed by one player. However, early prototypes just weren’t enjoyable to play. Lundgren suggested that Orbitals should pivot into mandatory co-op rather than being optional. As soon as Shapefarm committed to co-op only, reception completely changed. “I feel like with the experience that I had making those sorts of games, things started clicking,” Lundgren said. “When we gave the controllers to people, they started having fun almost immediately.” Another defining feature of Hazelight’s co-op games is the Friend Pass. It lets one owner of the game invite a friend to join for free. Since Orbitals is on Nintendo Switch 2, the game makes use of the system’s GameShare feature in place of a Friend Pass to have others play locally or online. “You shouldn't have to buy two copies of the game if you want to play with someone,” Lundgren explains. “So GameShare just kind of works out perfectly for this type of game.” Interestingly, the ‘80s-inspired anime art direction translates well with environmental design. During gameplay, any object that’s moving, whether it be a conveyor belt or rushing water, is cel-shaded. Everything else is colored in a gouache watercolor painting style. Incidentally, that’s what it would look like in an anime during that era. This dynamic also makes Orbitals more visually accessible. “It helps readability a lot,” assistant art director Johannes Varmedal said. “Everything that is moving and interactable is cel-shaded, so it also stands out a bit more.” The framerate in Orbitals is also tied to the art direction. Playing it feels more like a stop-motion film rather than the buttery smooth framerates that top tier AAA games try to hit. One of the most recent examples of this approach was last year’s South of Midnight by Compulsion Games, which used this to achieve more of a claymation aesthetic for its southern gothic setting. “It was absolutely intentional and stylistic in order to really make Orbitals feel as close as possible to our inspirational references from the ‘80s and ‘90s, where animation would usually be stuck to 12 frames a second,” he explained. “Some things that were even like, six frames!” A new Adventure Shapefarm previously contributed development to games like Naruto to Boruto: Shinobi Striker and Samurai Jack: Battle Through Time , but Orbitals is the studio’s first original IP. Varmedal has worked on both. He said that developing them rather than working hyper-realistic games cemented his preference to work on more stylized projects, praising the increased creative freedom he gets. “The way you use your creativity is slightly different, because in a realistic game, you'd sit and watch photo references for most of the time or very detailed concept art,” he explains. “You just recreate what is there while on [ Orbitals ] and many other stylized projects I've worked on, you have to come up with designs yourself.” He continued, “Every single asset we make, we have to really think and be creative with how we do it.” Orbitals is also being published by Kepler Interactive, who also published the outstanding and award-winning Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 last year. Varmedal says that the company believes in Shapefarm’s vision, saying, “[Kepler] gives us a lot of creative freedom on this project, and has been extremely supportive of what we want to achieve.” While I’ve only gotten a brief glimpse into Orbitals , I can tell it’s something special. The art style has been meticulously fine-tuned and lovingly drawn with care. That’s something crucial to nail down considering that it's arguably the game’s biggest selling point. I can’t wait to experience the adventures that Maki and Omura embark on when Orbitals launches in Summer 2026 on Nintendo Switch 2.

A release date was revealed, along with a teaser visual and main staff

Netflix announced today that a new anime film inspired by Osamu Tezuka's Princess Knight manga, titled THE RIBBON HERO , will stream on the platform this August. The below teaser visual was unveiled, along with main production staff details. THE RIBBON HERO Anime Teaser Visual Yuki Igarashi ( Star Wars: Visions - "Lop and Ocho") directs THE RIBBON HERO anime film at studio OUTLINE, with original character designs by Kei Mochizuki, animation character design by Issei Arakaki and art direction by Cedric Herole. Mai Yoneyama is credited with character design cooperation, and TWIN ENGINE is producing. Director Igarashi shared the following comment: For this film, I poured in my respect for Osamu Tezuka, the creator of ‘Princess Knight’, for Ichizo Kobayashi of the Takarazuka Revue, which lies at the root of the work, and for the supreme, classic entertainment they brought into the world. They also created their works while overcoming hardships such as infectious diseases and war, and those works became the very foundation of our culture. To everyone living in this era, I hope you enjoy this blood‑stirring, heart‑pounding piece of what I believe is ‘true’ mainstream entertainment. Tezuka's Princess Knight manga was first serialized in Shojo Club magazine between January 1953 and January 1956, spanning three collected volumes. A 52-episode anime adaptation produced by studio Mushi Production debuted in April 1967. Kodansha USA released a one-volume omnibus edition of the manga in English in 2022, describing the story like so: Set in a medieval fairy-tale backdrop, Princess Knight is the tale of a young princess named Sapphire who must pretend to be a male prince so she can inherit the throne. Women have long been prevented from taking the throne, but Sapphire is not discouraged and instead she fully accepts the role, becoming a dashing hero(ine) that the populous is proud of. The playful cartooning style of Princess Knight is comparable to that of Disney, à la Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. Considered by many as one of the first major shojo works, inspiring comics for girls such as Revolutionary Girl Utena, Cardcaptor Sakura and Sailor Moon for generations to follow. A rare shojo property from the godfather of manga, Princess Knight has been long considered one of Tezuka’s most popular works worldwide. Source: Press Release

KID PHENOMENON is a seven-member dance and vocal group, who made their debut in August 2023, embodies Tokyo's new generation culture "TOKYO NEO POP." Armed with their unique performance style, these young talents are set to create a new phenomenon from Tokyo to the world. They made their major debut on August 23, 2023, with the single “Wheelie.” Their second single, 「存在証明」(“Existence”) topped the Spotify Viral Chart (#1) weekly ranking for two consecutive weeks. Resonating with many listeners, they appeared on the popular YouTube channel “THE FIRST TAKE” just three months after their debut, where their strong vocal abilities received high praise. Since then, all of their releases have ranked in the Top 5 of the Oricon weekly charts. In 2025, they were invited to appear on the major Vietnamese program Tân Binh Toàn Năng (Show It All Vietnam) and represented Japanese boy groups in their first overseas performance. They continue striving to become a leading presence that shapes the trends of the times. Check out the interview below and learn about the group's favorite anime characters, which anime they would love to write a song for, and more. Thank you so much for taking the time to talk to us! Could you please introduce yourself to our Crunchyroll News readers? KENSUKE ：I’m Kensuke Sorematsu from KID PHENOMENON! I’m the leader of the group, mainly in charge of rap, but I also do vocals sometimes. My strongest skill is dancing! TSUBASA ：I’m Tsubasa Endo. I’m also known as “Tsucchan,” “Tsuttsu,” or “Bacchin.” I’m a vocalist in the group, and I specialize in singing R&B. KOHAKU ：I’m Kohaku Okao! I mainly handle rap and dance, and in the group I’m known as the “energy maker & breaker.” My strength is a middle-school-style hip-hop dance approach! SOMA ：I’m Soma Kawaguchi from KID PHENOMENON. In the group, I’m in charge of rap and dance, and the members call me the “counseling room” because I’m usually the one who listens to everyone. In my free time, I enjoy watching anime and movies, and playing games. SHUNNOSUKE ：I’m Shunnosuke Sato! I handle trackmaking in KID PHENOMENON. KOTA ：I’m Kota Yamamoto! My hobby is making music and I truly love coffee. RUI ：I’m Rui Suzuki! I’m the youngest member of the group. My biggest strength is KRUMP dance and I’d love to perform it for all of you. Congratulations on your North America debut showcase at SXSW in Austin! What was that moment like? KENSUKE : It was my first time performing in the United States, so I felt happy the entire time I was on stage. I was really moved to feel that we were able to share our music with everyone who came to see us. It became an unforgettable experience! SHUNNOSUKE ：Thank you! I’m just really happy. Even in an environment where cultures and languages are different across borders, it meant a lot to be able to share time with so many people through music, even just for a moment. Was this your first time in Texas? If so, what was the best thing you ate while visiting? KOHAKU : Mac and cheese, for sure!!! I had it as a side dish when I tried Texas barbecue and the cheese was incredibly good! Maybe it’s because I really love cheese, though. KOTA ：Yes, it was my first time! Texas BBQ was amazing! I love that kind of hearty, big portion of meat. It really felt like something unique to the U.S and I loved Texas-style BBQ. Aside from SXSW, what has been the best day of 2026 for KID PHENOMENON? RUI ：The rehearsals leading up to SXSW were the best. The schedule was really tight, and we practiced every day after finishing our other commitments, but no one lost motivation. Instead, it became a time where we grew even closer as a group. What are you most looking forward to in 2026 that you haven’t done yet? TSUBASA ：My dream is to visit many different countries and enjoy KID PHENOMENON’s entertainment together with people from around the world, so I’m really excited for that. KOTA ：Probably our second solo tour! We want to show how much we’ve evolved since D7SCOVER , and present a new, more advanced version of KID PHENOMENON while expressing the world of KIDS00 . If you could only perform one KID PHENOMENON song for the rest of your life, what would it be and why? SHUNNOSUKE ：I would say “Unstoppable.” I love both the song and the choreography. The choreography was created by an amazing dancer, Siena Lalau. This one track uses as much energy as three or four songs combined. It’s the kind of song where you can give it your all and truly feel the excitement of performing live. KOTA ：I’d choose “Unstoppable.” It matches our group’s theme of being unstoppable, and I think it’s the song that best represents who we are and our overall concept. We heard you guys are huge anime fans. Do you remember the first anime you watched growing up? KENSUKE ：The first anime I really got into was Inazuma Eleven ! KOHAKU ：I used to watch ONE PIECE and Dragon Ball with my dad, since he watched them a lot. With my siblings, we often watched Doraemon and Crayon Shin-chan . Playing on the KID in your name, what are some of your favorite childhood memories? TSUBASA ：One of my most memorable memories is gathering at the park with friends, playing games, and having fun without noticing the time passing. Even if we started playing in the morning, before we knew it, the sun had already set — that feeling is something I’d love to experience again. SOMA ：Ever since I was born, my head was so big that people around me were worried. When I started walking, I would always fall headfirst. I remember proudly telling other kids that I had a “rock-hard head.” Last year you performed the opening theme for The Dark History of the Reincarnated Villainess . If you were reborn into the world of your favorite anime series, what do you think your role would be? SHUNNOSUKE ：I’d want to be a stylish character who finds romance in their techniques. I’m drawn to those kinds of characters. If I were reincarnated into my favorite anime worlds, I’d want to use ninjutsu, become a Saiyan, live in a world with Titans, use Jujutsu, or go to an Edo era with Amanto… RUI ：Rather than what I think I’d be, I already know what I’d want to be… I’d want to be an incredibly handsome, super popular, and extremely strong character — and just dominate that world. We asked for your favorite anime and anime characters, do you relate to those characters specifically? If not, simply “Why are they your favorite?” KENSUKE ：My favorite is Chrome from Dr. STONE ! I really relate to how he charges forward toward the path he believes in, and that’s why I like him so much. TSUBASA ：Legoshi from BEASTARS is one of my favorite characters. His strong sense of responsibility, kindness, and the way he sticks to his own sense of justice really left an impression on me. KOHAKU ：Haku from Spirited Away — his full name is Nigihayami Kohakunushi! First of all, we share the same name, so of course I feel drawn to him. In the movie, he’s kind of like a prince — always staying by the main character’s side and watching over her — and he can even transform into a dragon. He’s such a cool character. He’s also called “Haku-sama” in the film, so I can’t help but react happily to that too. SOMA ：My favorite series is JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure , and I especially love Caesar Zeppeli. It’s not so much that I relate to him, but I’m deeply drawn to his strong sense of aesthetics and pride. He has the resolve to risk his life for his lineage and his comrades. At first glance, he may seem cool and a bit snobbish, but he actually has intense passion and deep kindness for his family and friends — that contrast is what makes him so incredibly cool to me. SHUNNOSUKE ：I love Naruto . There are so many characters, and both allies and enemies have their own stories, which makes them all lovable — that’s why I like it so much. Every character has a strong core, and there are many aspects I can relate to. I also learn a lot while watching the story. By the way, I especially love Obito Uchiha. I’m a big fan of his personality and his ability “Kamui.” KOTA ：Ken Kaneki from Tokyo Ghoul and Norman from The Promised Neverland . They’re both white-haired and handsome (laughs). I like intelligent and strong characters, and I’m drawn to their coolness and the way they always seem calm and composed. RUI ：I love Seishiro Nagi from BLUE LOCK . He’s an incredibly strong, almost unbeatable character, but there’s a moment where he loses his passion and experiences a setback. I really relate to the emotions he feels in that moment, which makes me like him even more. If you could create an anime theme for any show, which show would it be? What do you imagine the message of the song might sound like? KENSUKE ：I would say Dr. STONE ! Since the story is about rebuilding a world that once returned to zero, I’d want to create a song that encourages listeners to move forward strongly toward their dreams and goals. TSUBASA ：I’d love to sing a theme song for an anime adapted from a manga published in Weekly Shonen Jump , the Japanese magazine known for its motto of “Friendship, effort and victory.” All of those stories are truly inspiring, and I feel there are parts that overlap with our own journey, which would allow us to create something even more meaningful and convincing. KOHAKU : ONE PIECE ! Just like the pirates in the story overcome many obstacles as they search for the One Piece across the vast ocean, the seven of us are also on our own journey chasing our dreams. I’d want to create a song that carries a message of curiosity, ambition, and passion — encouraging people to keep moving forward in their own way without letting that fire fade, because if they do, they’ll eventually reach their goal. Through ONE PIECE , I’d love to express and embody that message ourselves. SOMA ：If I could choose any work, I’d pick JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure . The characters in the series have an unshakable sense of conviction and the strength to face anything head-on, and that always gives me energy. If I were to create a song, I’d want it to be something that fires people up the moment they hear it and makes them feel motivated to keep going. I’d pour our current momentum into it — a song about staying true to yourself no matter what anyone says — and create something that enhances the intense world of JoJo even more. SHUNNOSUKE : JUJUTSU KAISEN . It’s currently airing, and the theme songs so far have all been incredible — I always listen to them without skipping before watching the episodes. I’d love to express the chaotic world of curses and different energies from JUJUTSU KAISEN through our music as well. KOTA ：I’d like to work on something that has a darker tone and explores the human psyche deeply. I’d want to create a story about rebellion and rising up from failure. RUI ：I’d love to do a theme song for BLUE LOCK . It’s one of my absolute favorite anime, and it’s something I definitely want to achieve in my life. I’d want to include a message that gives people courage, with a melody so emotional it could even bring listeners to tears. OK, last question. Do you have a final message for your fans? KENSUKE ：Thank you so much for your continued support. From here on, KID PHENOMENON will continue to share our new culture, TOKYO NEO POP, with the world and create a real phenomenon! We’ll keep absorbing different cultures and expressing them through our own filter, so please look forward to the world we create. And we’ll come meet all of you around the world! TSUBASA ：Thank you so much to everyone who always supports us. We’re still growing, and we learn so much from all of you — that’s what helps us improve. Let’s combine the energy of SPINEL KIDS and our own energy to create an amazing phenomenon in the world! KOHAKU ：Thank you so much for always supporting us! We aim to spread entertainment on a global scale and make the world full of smiles, while making KID PHENOMENON resonate worldwide. We’ll continue to work hard humbly as artists from Japan, so please keep supporting us! We’re definitely going to make it big! SOMA ：Thank you so much for your constant support. From here on, we’ll keep delivering the strongest music and performances that only the seven of us can create, so please continue to believe in us and stay with us. Let’s go see amazing sights together! SHUNNOSUKE ：We’ll keep working hard to deliver our music to even more people! And to all the fans who always support us, we’ll continue to be a group that keeps you excited for what’s ahead! KOTA ：Thank you so much for always supporting us! KID PHENOMENON will continue to step out into new worlds, so please keep supporting us! RUI ：Thank you all so much for your continued support! I want to keep delivering gratitude and courage to everyone through our performances. We put our feelings into everything we express, so please receive it wholeheartedly!

Love Unseen Beneath the Clear Night Sky Anime Second Trailer The ending theme song will be “Hikari” performed by Yui Sakurai of girl group FRUITS ZIPPER. Three-time Japan Academy Award-winning composer Harumi Fuuki, who is best known for the soundtrack for the Tsurune anime, is composing the music for the show. Joe Yoshizaki directs the TV anime adaptation at animation studio MAKARIA, with series composition by Yuko Kakihara, character designs by Yoshihiro Sawada and Yuzui Ishii, and sound direction by Satoshi Motoyama. The series will premiere on July 6. Shochiku, who are producing the series, describes Love Unseen Beneath the Clear Night Sky as such: One spring night, Kakeru Sorano, a university freshman, is dragged by his dormmate Narumi to a welcome party. There, he meets Koharu Fuyutsuki, a blind girl who laughs often and speaks of her dreams; she’s practically the polar opposite of him. From the moment he picks up her white cane after class, the distance between them begins to shrink. “I want to see fireworks,” she says one day. Those words carry a light that Kakeru gazes at directly for the first time. A girl who cannot see and a boy who has shut himself off—this is a delicate love story woven by two people searching for light. Source: Press Release
